The Alfred Dunhill Championship is a professional men's golf tournament played in South Africa . It belongs to the Sunshine Tour and is one of the few events in South Africa that is held together with the European Tour .

The tournament was established in 2000, but its origins go back to the South African PGA Championship sponsored by Dunhill between 1995 and 1999 . After the Alfred Dunhill PGA Championship followed in 1999, the company decided to interrupt its participation in the South African PGA and create its own tournament. The first event was held at the Houghton Golf Club in Johannesburg in January 2000 and replaced the South African PGA Championship on the European tour calendar.

In 2004 the tournament was moved to December, so that two events took place that year. After this change, the Alfred Dunhill Championship was part of the European Tour season of the following year. In addition, they moved to the Leopard Creek Golf Club south of the Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga .

The Dunhill Championship should not be confused with the Dunhill Links Championship , which is also part of the European Tour, but has a much higher prize money and is played in Scotland .
