The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is one of the most prestigious golf tournaments on the European Tour . It will be played at the beginning of October on three different links courses around the "home of golf" St Andrews in Fife , Scotland .
The tournament is a pro-am , i. In other words, there are teams made up of professional golfers and amateurs. One round each is played in St Andrews , Carnoustie and Kingsbarns . A cut follows these three rounds . The top sixty professionals are allowed to continue playing in the finals at St Andrews. Then there are the top twenty teams, regardless of whether the professionals of the teams have made the individual cut.
Originally introduced in 2001 as the Dunhill Links Championship , the event replaced the Alfred Dunhill Cup (1985–2000), a three-team tournament. This lost its importance in 2000 when the World Cup of Golf was added to the World Golf Championships tournament series under the name WGC World Cup . The luxury goods brand dunhill has sponsored and named the event since 1985 .
In order to increase interest in the event, famous personalities from sports and entertainment are regularly invited. Nigel Mansell , Ian Botham , Gary Lineker , Boris Becker , Franz Klammer , Luís Figo , Michael Douglas , Samuel L. Jackson , Michael Vaughan , Sir Matthew Pinsent , Hugh Grant and Shane Warne have participated as amateurs . The equivalent of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on the PGA Tour is the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am .
