Ernesto Bertarelli (born September 22, 1965 in Rome ) is an Italian - Swiss entrepreneur and billionaire . After his father's death in 1998, he inherited the company. Together with his family, he was a former majority shareholder, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Serono SA , the world's third largest biotech company, which has been part of Merck KGaA since January 2007 ; the takeover price was around 16 billion Swiss francs, the equivalent of around 13 billion euros.

Bertarelli was made a Knight of the French Legion of Honor in 2003 .

The entrepreneur

Bertarelli is of Italian descent and received Swiss citizenship at the age of 24 . He attended Babson College in Boston and Harvard Business School , where he received his MBA . He lived in Geneva until November 2007 and since then in Gstaad in the canton of Bern, Switzerland. He is married to the singer and songwriter and former Miss United Kingdom Kirsty Bertarelli and has three children.

According to the business magazine Bilanz , in 2004 he was the fourth richest person living in Switzerland with around CHF 9 to 10 billion in assets . By 2018, his estimated net worth had risen to between CHF 13 billion and CHF 14 billion. He came 7th among the 300 richest in Switzerland.

On the Forbes 2016 list , Ernesto Bertarelli's fortune is given at around $ 8.6 billion. This makes him the richest Swiss (as of March 2016). He ranks 129th on Forbes' list of the richest people in the world.

The sailor

Sails has been a fanatic since he was a child, and Bertarelli has taken part in many competitions both at sea and on Lake Geneva . He grew up dreaming of participating in and winning the America's Cup . He reached his destination in 2003 and repeated this success in 2007 - he sailed as navigator on the Alinghi in all races.

In 1998 he won the Sardinia Cup , five times the Bol d'Or in 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 and finished third in the Fastnet Race in 1999. In 2001 he won the 12M World Championships and the Swedish Match Cup in Marstrand in 2002 as a crew member and the Farr 40 World Championships in 2001 as a helmsman .

In 1999 he built the Alinghi IV, one of the fastest and most idiosyncratic catamarans for inland waters.
