Marstrand is a small town in the Swedish province of Västra Götalands län and historic Bohuslän . It is located about 30 km northwest of Gothenburg on the islands of Marstrandsö and Koö in the Kattegat . Marstrand is located in the municipality of Kungälv .

Previously defined as a contiguous crime scene , in 2015 the Statistiska centralbyrån identified the district on the larger eastern island of Koö, also known as Arvidsvik , as an independent crime scene, Marstrand Arvidsvik . The older part of the place on the offshore island Marstrandsö, separated by a strait about 200 meters wide, is still called Marstrand as the place of the crime . The newer part of Arvidsvik now has more than twice as many inhabitants as the old Marstrand.

history

View of Marstrand from Koö (Arvidsvik)

When Marstrand was founded is unclear, but in 1291 the place was mentioned in a Franciscan document and in 1313 a letter of privilege was issued to the citizens of Marstrand. Marstrand belonged to Norway at that time and was an important fishing and trading port. The oldest known town charter dates from 1442 , awarded by Christoph III.

In 1658 Marstrand became part of Sweden, and in 1689 the mighty fortress Carlsten (Carlstens fästning) was built over the town . 172 steps lead up to the tower. The second half of the 18th century was a new heyday for Marstrand due to the abundant herring fishing. In 1775 Marstrand became a free port ; however, this privilege was revoked in 1794.

The city's development stagnated in the 19th century. Attempts were made to establish itself as a seaside resort, and when King Oscar II spent his summers here towards the end of the century, Marstrand became one of the most important seaside resorts on the west coast.

As a result of the municipal reform of 1862, Marstrand remained a municipality (stadskommun) and was consequently Sweden's smallest city in terms of population. With the municipal reform of 1971, through which, among other things, cities in the political sense in Sweden were abolished, the municipality of Marstrand became part of the municipality of Kungälv.

The Swedish pop group ABBA shot the video clip for their number 1 hit The Winner Takes It All in Marstrand in the summer of 1980 , in which the group can be seen in the law firm's house, among other places.

Cityscape

Marstrandsö is a car-free island and can only be reached by ferry from Koö island. On Marstrandsö is the older part of Marstrand, which still has a medieval floor plan. The houses are mostly made of wood. The cityscape is dominated by the Carlsten fortress towering above the city and the hotels and villas of the bathers from the 19th century. Interesting buildings are Marstrands kyrka from the 14th century, the partnership house from 1886, the Warmbad from 1858 and the Grand Hotel.

Sports

Every year at the beginning of July the Match Cup Sweden sailing regatta takes place at Marstrand . In June 2009 Marstrand was the destination of the 8th stage of the Volvo Ocean Race .
