Percy Dudgeon Quensel

Percy Dudgeon Quensel (born September 8, 1881 in Marstrand , Bohuslän ; † March 3, 1966 in Oscars församling, Stockholms län ) was a Swedish mineralogist, petrologist and geologist.

Life

Quensel was the son of theology professor Johan Oscar Quensel and his wife Eleonore Florence Elizabeth (née Dickson). He studied at the University of Uppsala and at the University of Heidelberg and the University of Graz . In 1911 he received his doctorate in Uppsala and was a lecturer there from 1910. 1907 to 1909 he took part in the Swedish Patagonia Expedition, the Magellan Expedition of Carl Skottsberg . In 1910 he was involved in the preparation of excursions for the International Geological Congresses in Stockholm and in Canada in 1913 . From 1914 to 1948 he was Professor of Mineralogy and Petrology at Stockholm University . Even after his retirement he remained scientifically active until his death. In 1939 he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences .

In 1920 he went on a study trip to the oil fields of Mexico . Later he dealt with Quaternary geology, mineralogical studies in South America and the geology and petrography of the Scandinavian Mountains and Västerbotten, as well as Swedish mineral deposits in general.

In 1950 he became an honorary member of the German Mineralogical Society and the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland . He was also an honorary member of the Austrian Mineralogical Society .

The Quensel Glacier on South Georgia and the mineral Quenselite are named after him. A groundsel (Senecio quenselii) and a mountain in Tierra del Fuego (Cerro Quensel) were named in his honor.

He was married to the zoologist Annie Therèse (née Weiss, October 24, 1886 - May 22, 1933) since April 22, 1911. She was a daughter of the court and court advocate Sigmund Weiss and his wife Therèse (born Stukart).
