Life

Skottsberg was the son of the headmaster Carl Adolf Skottsberg and his wife Maria Lovisa (née Pfeiffer). He first enrolled at the University of Stockholm and then studied from 1898 to 1907 at Uppsala University , where he received his first academic degree in 1901 and also lectured. From 1901 to 1903 he took part in the Swedish Antarctic Expedition under Otto Nordenskjöld . In 1907 he received his doctorate with the text To the knowledge of the sub-Antarctic and Antarctic marine algae and led the Swedish expedition to Patagonia from 1907 to 1909 .

From 1909 to 1914 he was a curator and curator at the Botanical Museum at Uppsala University. From 1919 he was director of the botanical garden. As a scientist he examined the plants and vegetation zones of the Antarctic, Subantarctis, South American and the Pacific region. He published his own writings and also contributed to community articles and books. He played a significant part in the multi-volume series Växternas liv: Populousvetenskaplig handbok , which appeared from 1932 to 1940 and for which he wrote the introductions and classifications of the newly discovered plants.

Skottsberg was married to Inga Margareta Skottsberg (born Reuter, 1888–1985) and had three children. His daughter Brita Skottsberg Åhman (1910-1993) studied political science and completed her studies with a dissertation on Austrian parliamentarianism. From 1946 to 1948 she worked for Herbert Tingsten at the Institute for Foreign Affairs in Stockholm and was a member of the Swedish delegation to the General Assembly of the United Nations. As a translator from German, she transferred, among other things, the diaries of Joseph Goebbels and the minutes of the negotiations against Adolf Eichmann . She was married to Sven Åhman (1907-1993).

The plant genera Skottsbergianthus Boelcke from the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae), Skottsbergiliana H.St.John from the cucurbitaceae family , the moss genus Skottsbergia Cardot and the mushroom genus Skottsbergiella Petr are named after him . He is also the namesake for Cape Skottsberg on Trinity Island in Antarctica and Mount Skottsberg on South Georgia in the South Atlantic. The Lago Skottsberg in the Torres del Paine National Park , Chile , is named after him .
