Karlshamn is a city in southern Sweden in the Blekinge County . The town with a population of over 20,000 (as of 2015) is the main town of the Karlshamn municipality . It is 55 kilometers west of Karlskrona , 60 kilometers from Kristianstad and 150 km northeast of Malmö .
history
The city is a new establishment under Karl X. Gustav , who built a Baltic port and shipyard around the old village of Bodekull . The place received city rights in 1664 and the name of its founder in 1666. From 1666 to 1675 the fortress Karlshamn ( Karlshamns kastell ) was built on the small island of Frisholmen. Before that, the slightly larger island of Boon was used to defend Karlshamn. In the middle of 1874, the 78 kilometer long Karlshamn-Vislanda railway line (gauge 1067 mm) was inaugurated by King Oskar II ; it connects Karlshamn with Södra stambanan . The Sölvesborg - Karlshamn railway was inaugurated on December 22nd, 1886. It was later electrified and is part of the 'Blekinge kustbana'. Around 1886 the 'Mellersta Blekinge järnväg' (railway line Karlshamn - Sölvesborg) was built; In 1890 the Karlskrona - Kristianstad railway was completed. From around 1850 to 1940 granite was mined and exported around Karlshamn . In the 1950s, the coastal line was converted to standard gauge .

From Karlshamn there is ferry service across the Baltic Sea to Liepāja in Latvia and to Klaipėda in Lithuania .

The Baltic Song Contest takes place annually in Karlshamn , in which Germany also takes part.

The Carl Gustafs Church dates from the 17th century.
Near Karlshamn is the Gungvalamasten , one of the four tallest structures in Sweden.
In Karlshamn there is also the “Emigrant Monument” by Axel Olsson, which shows the two fictional characters Karl-Oskar and Kristina from Vilhelm Moberg 's tetralogy of Emigrants . In the novels, the two board a ship to America in Karlshamn. The memorial is a popular attraction for Americans of Swedish descent.
Karlshamn is the end of the Emigration Road .

A thermal power plant with three blocks of 340 MW each is located to the west of Karlshamn on the Starkö peninsula . His three 141 per meter high chimneys are a highly visible landmark .
