Route to Copenhagen

Södra stambanan ( German  The Southern Main Railway ) is a railway line in southern Sweden that runs from Malmö to Katrineholm . It is one of the most important rail connections in the country.

The term Södra stambanan is an art term for today's route. Historically, the Södra stambana is the Malmö – Nässjö – Falköping line, the Nässjö – Katrineholm section was built as an Östra stambanan .

history

Start and end point: Malmö C

In the middle of the 19th century the Swedish Diet decided to build a railway network consisting of trunk lines. Above all, the railway lines coming from Stockholm had to be expanded towards Gothenburg and Skåne . For Södra stambanan there were a few conceivable final stops: Ystad with what was then Sweden's largest port, Helsingborg due to its proximity to Denmark and Malmö. The current route was chosen because the port of Malmös was closest to Copenhagen and the university town of Lund could be connected to the rail network. The first section from Malmö to Lund was inaugurated on December 1, 1856, followed by the line to Höör in 1858 . Two years later the route led to Hässleholm and finally to Älmhult in 1862 .

Then it was necessary to determine the further route to the north in the direction of Småland . Due to the fact that arduous terrain with many lakes and extensive swampy soil prevails in this region, the route was not built through the city of Växjö , but a few kilometers west of the city, on a completely undeveloped area. This was an advantage because the construction wanted to achieve a straight route as far as possible so that the Småland highlands could be overcome with little effort. In 1864 the shortened route was completed.

Västkustbanan (left) and Södra stambanan branch in Lund

The Nässjö - Norrköping section began in the mid-1860s . The section was completed in 1874 and connected to the existing railway to Katrineholm. In Katrineholm, Västra stambanan connects Gothenburg to Stockholm.

There was heavy traffic on the new route right from the start. In order to cope with the increasing number of passengers, some sections were expanded to double tracks. This happened in 1901 between Malmö and Lund and in 1904 between Lund and Hässleholm. It was not until the end of the Second World War that further extensions could be realized. In 1958 the line to Norrköping was double-track, in 1964 the entire line to Katrineholm. The electrification existed after the war for the entire route.

The high-speed train X2000 has been running Södra stambana since 1995, reducing the travel time from Malmö to Stockholm to 4½ hours. The section between Malmö and Lund is the busiest route in Sweden in terms of passenger numbers. The route is operated by Statens Järnvägar , regionally also by other operators such as Skånetrafik and Östgötatagraph .

future

Pendeltåg in Fiskeby

The following expansion options have been implemented, planned or checked by the Swedish railway authority Banverket or its successor company Trafikverket since around 2010 :

  • In Alvesta the Södra stambana and the westward Kust-till-Kustbana meet. An expansion of the station and the railway systems should ensure better connections between the two railways.
  • Between Arlöv and Malmö, the expansion from two to four pairs of tracks is being pushed forward, as the number of trains on this route has doubled in the last five years, mainly due to the Öresund connection. For the same reason, the main station in Malmö was rebuilt and the city tunnel Malmö built.
  • An additional overtaking lane is under construction in Eslöv so that passing trains are not slowed down by slower freight trains.
  • Plans to increase the maximum speed between Gripenberg and Lund to 250 km / h.
  • Between Alvesta and Hässleholm, the stops or train stations Vislanda, Diö, Killeberg, Hästveda and Ballingslöv, which had been closed since the 1970s, were reopened for local public transport by the Pågatåg company on December 14, 2013 . The Sösdala stop was opened south of Hässleholm on May 14, 2011, and Tjörnarp followed on December 14, 2014.
  • Ostlänken is planned with a planning horizon up to 2033 . It is a 150 km long two-lane rail line that is to be built between Järna and Linköping . It should better connect the regions Östergötland and Södermanland with the Mälardalen and the greater Stockholm area. In addition, it should be possible to save another hour between the major cities of Malmö or Gothenburg and Stockholm.
