The Järna – Åby railway is a standard gauge railway in Sweden . The Järna - Nyköping section was opened in 1913 and the section between Nyköping and Åby in 1915. The route was built with the background that between Stockholm and Nyköping, in addition to Västra Stambanan between Södertälje and Katrineholm, another route would be available as an alternative route. The builder and operator of the line were the Statens Järnvägar (SJ).

history

As early as the end of the 1890s, due to the increasing traffic on the Västra stambanan, consideration was given to building a new relief route via Nyköping in order to achieve shorter travel times. On March 12, 1895 it was decided to investigate the possibilities of a new railway line between Järna on the Västra stambanan and Åby on the Södra stambanan .

Various options were examined, the planning and cost estimation was only carried out for the Järna – Nyköping – Norrköping line. On May 26, 1907, the two chambers of the Swedish Reichstag approved the draft.

The line was to be built in two stages; construction began in June 1908. The line was to be built by 1909. The construction costs including the vehicles were estimated at 13.3 million crowns . The first stage was the Järna – Enstaberga section, the second stage was the Enstaberga – Åby section. The line between Åby and Norrköping was built parallel to Östra stambanan , making this section double-track.

For the first section, Skånska Cementgjuteriet was awarded the contract as general contractor for an offer of 4.59 million crowns. The alignment work began at the end of 1909 and the construction work was officially completed on December 1, 1913. However, the start of operations between Nyköping and Enstaberga was postponed after it was decided that this should only take place after completion of the entire route, i.e. the second stage.

In 1911 the SJ decided not to outsource the second stage to a general contractor , but to build it on their own. The alignment work began in autumn 1911, in spring 1914 ballast and tracks were laid. The construction work was finished on October 1, 1915 - on that date, operations began on the entire route.

Nykoping train station

Nyköping was opened up by the Oxelösund – Flen – Västmanlands Järnväg (OFWJ) with a railway line since June 1, 1876. However, due to various problems, it was not possible to introduce the two routes into a common station.

After the Åby station was relocated, it was merged with the line from Katrineholm. The new route with a total length of 116.2 kilometers including the section from Åby to Norrköping belonging to Södra Stambanan was around 18 kilometers shorter than the route via Katrineholm.

The actual cost of the route after completion was 16.337 million crowns. The rails weighed 40.5 kg / m per meter. A total of 13 train stations , one stopping, loading and crossing point, two stopping and loading points and two stops were created. 30 railwayman's houses , a locomotive shed with four stalls in Nyköping with a 20-meter turntable and a bridge over the Kolmården – Virå railway line were built. The locomotive shed, which was later superfluous, was only demolished on May 4, 2007.

After the Getå railway accident , one of the worst in Swedish railway history, the line was closed from October 1 to December 21, 1918.

Expansion of the route

Over the years, the route has been expanded again and again. The contact wire was put into operation between Krokek and Åby on July 27, 1932 and between Järna and Krokek on August 9, 1932. Today's rails usually have a meter weight of 50 to 60 kg / m. The rails are fully welded and are mostly laid on concrete sleepers.

The train protection system CTC was put into operation on November 20, 1968, ATC followed between Järna and Åby on June 9, 1980.

A new, approximately five-kilometer-long, two-lane entry into Västra stambanan in Järna was put into operation on May 20, 1993.

traffic

Today the traffic on the route has a more local character. Some freight trains also run. Between 2006 and 2010 the SJ operated double-decker X40 multiple units between Gävle and Linköping on this route. Today the local trains run on Nyköpingsbanan on part of the route or on the entire route between Stockholm and Linköping. These are partly made up of trains with locomotives , partly from X40 railcars . In addition, there are multiple units of the types X12 and X52 on the Nyköping – Norrköping section .

The trains between Stockholm and Malmö run via Flen and Katrineholm, the route via Nyköping is used as a diversion route in the event of traffic disruptions.

future

Since the naming of railway lines by Banverket in 1990, the line has been called Nyköpingsbanan .

The so-called Ostlänken , a new railway connection between Södertälje and Linköping, is planned. The purpose is to shorten travel times, to increase capacity between Stockholm and Norrköping / Linköping and to build a rail connection to Stockholm-Skavsta Airport outside Nyköping. A precise route has not yet been defined.
