The SJ X12 series is a standard-gauge Swedish electric multiple unit series . It was developed by Asea Brown Boveri on the basis of the SJ X10 series. Between 1991 and 1994 a total of 18 units were built by Asea Brown Boveri for operation with 15 kV 16.7 Hz alternating current.

Technical Equipment

The vehicles consisted of two vehicle parts, the powered X12A and the control car X12B. The X12A was equipped with first and second class compartments on delivery, the X12B only had the second class. Compared to the X10, they had a more comfortable interior, toilet and only one pair of doors per car, plus more legroom in first class with the same seats. A small kitchenette was installed in one of the cars.

The multiple units received the blue color scheme from SJ and were integrated into regional traffic in Östergötland. For a short time, the X12 was used on the Swedish section of the Luleå – Narvik and Sundsvall – Storlien lines. A short-term attempt was made to use the X12 on the Stockholm – Sundsvall – Långsele route, but the route was far too long given the comfort of the train.

commitment

The trains were first used at Statens Järnvägar, later they increasingly migrated to Länstrafik ( German  regional traffic ). From 1997 to the beginning of the 21st century eight sets were sold to Västmanlands Lokaltrafik and Upplands Lokaltrafik (UL). The sets used by UL were given the numbers 51–53.

Västtrafik has used around ten cars since the early 2000s . In 2008 Västtrafik decided to buy these trains. They have been modernized and given a yellow paint job. First class was dissolved and converted into second class.

Three trains went in dividing the state railway in the different areas such as network and operating 2001 Affaersverket Statens Järnvägar and got the owner code SSRT, which is an abbreviation of trains the Swedish State Railways ( Swedish State Railways Trains can be considered). Affärsverket Statens Järnvägar was dissolved in 2012 and the multiple units were handed over to Trafikverket . In 2013 she bought Transitio on behalf of Västmanlands Lokaltrafik, which then rented it.

In 2012/2013, SJ converted the four railcars remaining in Mälardalen and Östergötland. They received new seats, luggage racks and sockets as well as a gray color scheme. As with the Västtrafik trains, 1st class has been given up. The cars have wheelchair ramps, wheelchair spaces and adapted toilets. However, assistance from the train crew is required to get into the vehicle in a wheelchair.

The Transitios / Västmanlands Lokaltrafk trains have also been modernized.

In 2018, the trains ran the Sala – Västerås – Eskilstun – Linköping route, known as Uven-tåget . They use the single- track Kolbäck – Oxelösund line , the double- track Stockholm – Örebro line between Västerås N and Kolbäck and the double-track Södra stambana between Flen and Linköping .

From 2019 or 2020, traffic will be carried out with new Stadler Dosto double-decker trains as MÄLAB.

Conversion to X14

Two trains, 3223 and 3190, which were used at Östgötatagraphs , were converted into the X14 series in 2000 and 2008 .
