As Main Line Through Upper Norrland is railway ( Ånge -) Bracke - Långsele - Vännäs - soil in Sweden called. It is often seen as part of the Norra stambanan . It was built in 1883–1894 and electrified in 1939–1942.

history

The Swedish State Railways Statens Järnvägar (SJ) opened the 50-kilometer section between Ragunda and Långsele and the 14-kilometer Långsele – Sollefteå line as a partial and secondary line on October 1, 1886 .

technical description

The 629 kilometer long railway line is mainly single-track. Only on the short section of around five kilometers between Hörnsjö and Högbränna - through two tunnels and a river bridge over the Öreälven - is the line extended to two tracks. According to the Swedish network authority Trafikverket , the route is approved for a maximum speed of 160 km / h. In addition to the inland railway , which is quite simply developed in the north and is only served for travelers in summer , the railway line is the most important and in some cases the only connection from central and southern Sweden to northern Sweden and Narvik in northeast Norway .

Branch lines

Various lines branch off from the Stambanan genom övre Norrland : The Forsmo – Hoting , Hällnäs – Storuman and Jörn – Arvidsjaur lines form the connection with the inland railway and are called cross-railways. While the first two routes are mainly used for freight traffic - there is only one passenger train connection between Umeå and Lycksele - traffic on the third route is completely suspended. Here the private Inlandsbanan AB is trying to resume traffic.

The other routes Mellansel – Örnsköldsvik , Vännäs – Holmsund , Bastuträsk – Skelleftehamn and Nyfors – Piteå are branch lines to cities on the Swedish Baltic coast . An alternative railway line to the Stambanan genom övre Norrland between ( Gävle ) Sundsvall and Umeå has only existed since 2010 with the Botniabana .
