The Jörn – Arvidsjaur railway , also Tvärbanan Jörn – Arvidsjaur , is a railway line in the northern Swedish provinces of Västerbotten County and Norrbotten County . It is the northernmost and shortest connection between the Stambanan genom övre Norrland and the Inlandsbahn . The other crossways are Forsmo – Hoting and Hällnäs – Storuman .

history

Water crane in Arvidsjaur

Construction of the railway line between Jörn and Arvidsjaur began in 1924 and was completed in December 1928. In 1990 the freight traffic was stopped except for the section between Arvidsjaur and Nordlunda and since then there have only been bicycle draisines for tourists. In 2010, around three kilometers of the railway line went back into operation: the peat loading facility in Jörn was opened.

The draisine infrastructure in Arvidsjaur was dismantled in 2010 and there were sporadic train journeys in the Arvidsjaur area. There are efforts to resume freight traffic on the route. At Trafikverket , the route is still included in the current maps (2014), but bears the note: Nedlagd - Dressintrafik . The level crossings at Missenträsk have been overpowered for a long time.

There is no longer any regular traffic on the Arvidsjaur – Nordlunda route. The service of the junction set up in 1951 was given up at the end of 2002. The sawmill is no longer working, so no freight wagons have to be transferred here. There is a special feature at Nordlunda: Part of the route in front of Nordlunda is electrified by means of an overhead line, another part behind Nordlunda has a conductor rail . Here was storstockholms lokaltrafik the winter performance tested their vehicles (SL) at least of 2008.

future

Possible recommissioning

Inlandsbanan AB's current development plan aims to take over the railway line from Trafikverket. After the problem of the simple route class A was eliminated on the route there and the Inlandsbahn functions as a diversion route in Swedish rail traffic, the resumption of traffic on this route is an issue. On March 19, 2013, an interpellation debate on the future of the railway took place in the Swedish parliament . In a press release from Inlandsbanan AB on March 20, 2014, the reopening of the railway line in 2014 was given top priority. Obviously nothing happened. There was only one change in the official railway maps: While "nedlagd" (discontinued) was used here for the past few years, "Indraget underhåll" (no maintenance) can be read since the timetable change in 2016/17.

In 2017, according to Inlandsbanan AB, it was planned that the Jörn – Arvidsjaur railway line would be reopened in 2019.

Possible test track

Reception building Jörn - intended as staff accommodation

An alternative way of putting the railway line back into operation is the project of converting it into a test track that will, in particular, test vehicles and infrastructure components for their winter suitability. The Rail Test Nordic AB (RTN) is planning to complete electrification of the track. Reversing loops are to be built at both ends and in Glommersträsk, the axle load is to be increased to 25 tons , the ETCS Level 2 train control system is to be installed and the Jörn – Glommersträsk section is to be designed for 250 km / h. At both ends of the route, 220-meter-long, air-conditioned halls are to be built in which journeys between the tunnel and the winter cold can be simulated. The operations center is to be built in Jörn, and the existing reception building is to be converted into an employee accommodation. The feasibility study for the project is available. The construction time will be three years, the costs 150 million euros. Funding is to come from the EU , the Swedish state, the districts of Norrbotten and Västerbotten , the municipalities of Skellefteå and Arvidsjaur and sponsors . Stadler Rail and Bombardier have expressed their interest in using the facility.

On February 18, 2020, the board of Trafikverket approved the takeover of the railway line for 30 years through this project. Since no more freight traffic is subsequently possible and Inlandsbanan AB was not included, it filed a lawsuit against this decision in March 2020.

particularities

The writer Sara Lidman (1923–2004) from Missenträsk wrote five novels from 1977–1985 about the colonization and the construction of the railroad in her home area.
