The Hällnäs – Storuman railway is a standard-gauge railway in northern Sweden . It is the longest of the cross railways between the Stambanan genom övre Norrland and the Inlandsbahn .

history

The line was put into operation in stages. Freight traffic between Hällnäs and Åmsele began in 1922. Regular passenger and goods traffic on the Hällnäs – Lycksele section began in 1924. The stretch between Lycksele and Storuman was only opened in December 1930 .

Passenger traffic was stopped on the last section built in 1992, and three years later also between Hällnäs and Lycksele. In the last few years Länstrafik i Västerbotten operated passenger transport. On August 15, 2011, passenger traffic between Hällnäs and Lycksele through the province of Västerbotten County was resumed. From then on, through trains run between Umeå and Lycksele operated by Norrtåg . A class Y31 railcar - Bombardier Itino - is also used.

Route description

The route is 167 kilometers long and leads from Hällnäs westwards via Lycksele to Storuman. It is single-track and not electrified. The route is relatively straight, but there are numerous curves that reduce the top speed of the route. Wooden sleepers are mainly used. Lycksele is the only surviving en-route station.

The permissible axle load is 22.5 tons, the maximum speed for freight trains 70 km / h.

traffic

On the Hällnäs – Lycksele section, up to eight passenger trains from Vy Norrtåg and five freight trains run by Green Cargo with a Td series diesel locomotive run daily . Wood and wood products are shipped. The Lycksele – Storuman section is only served when required.

In order to create an intersection on the single-lane route between Hällnäs and Lycksele, the previously existing intersection in Åmsele was re-established in 2020.

Another construction project that has been planned since 2017 is the Gleisdreieck to connect the inland railway in the direction of the Vinlidsberg timber loading facility (- Vilhelmina ). This is intended to simplify the operational process for loading goods. For this purpose, the track connection of the NLC Storumanterminalen, which was inaugurated on August 15, 2012 between the E12 and the E45, is to be extended to the Inlandsbahn.
