The Swedish diesel multiple units of the Y31 and Y32 series, which have been in use since 2003, are manufactured under the name Itino by Bombardier Transportation at the Hennigsdorf plant in Germany. The multiple units also used in Germany differ in the number of cars. While the Y31 consists of two motorized end cars, the Y32 also has a non-powered middle car. The vehicles are owned by the Transitio leasing company , which makes them available to local companies.
technology
The maximum speed of the train is 140 km / h. It has two MAN diesel engines that are based on a truck engine. The power is transmitted hydraulically. From 2008, the newly built trains received two more powerful Iveco engines from the truck sector. The transmission from ZF Friedrichshafen is used in trucks and buses. The four railcars for the Kustpilen have a first-class compartment with eight seats to replace the Y2 . Each railcar part has a handicapped accessible low-floor section.
Areas of application
In Sweden, the trains are used by local modes of transport, such as on the routes operated by Krösatågen , on the Gårdsjö – Håkantorp railway line ( Västtrafik , used by Arriva ) and in Värmland on the Kil – Torsby railway line ( Värmlandstrafik , used by Tågkompaniet). The Y1 railcars, some of which are still in use, are to be completely replaced by the Y31 over time.
List of existing Y31 and Y32 trains
- Tåg i Bergslagen used the first two Itino railcars 1400 and 1401 delivered to Sweden on the Västerdalsbana from 2002 to 2011 , but returned the vehicles to Transitio after passenger traffic on this route was closed.

Braking problems
At the beginning of their use, it turned out that the braking system required significantly reduced speeds in places due to its design in special winter conditions. This depended u. a. This goes hand in hand with the fact that the usual method in Germany of letting the driver apply the brakes during the journey (“cleaning the brake”) was not accepted in Sweden. The sensitive anti-skid system therefore intervened early, which would have led to longer braking distances. The security system on trains in Sweden detects this and recommends a reduced speed. The operator considered this to be unsuitable for operation (compared to the old trains previously used, which were not equipped with a comparable anti-skid system). Therefore, the two multiple units initially delivered to Västerdalsbanan were parked until the problem was resolved and replaced by trains from Statens Järnvägar .
The solution largely consisted of the introduction of special "winter braking software" that controls the regular application of the brakes and thus ensures an improved braking effect through constant pre-cleaning and frictional heat.
