Falun – Västerdalarnes Järnväg to Falun
Route - straight ahead
after Borlänge

The Västerdalsbanan connects Repbäcken near Borlänge with Malung in central Sweden . The railway line is built in standard gauge .

history

Today's railway line was opened in several sections by various railway companies. In 1905 the Falun-Västerdalarnes Järnväg (FVJ) opened the route from Falun via Repbäcken to Björbo . In 1907 the Björbo section followed Vansbro through the Stockholm – Västerås – Bergslagens Järnvägar (SWB) and in 1934 the Vansbro – Malung section through the Limedsforsen – Särna Järnväg (LSJ).

After the subsequent railway line via Malungsfors to Sälen and Särna was shut down in the 1960s , it was dismantled to Malungsfors station in 1972/73. In the years after 2000, the route to Malungfors was closed with the notice "Underhållet upphört".

As of 2009, the line was the first line in the world to be equipped with the ERTMS Regional train control system, a simplified version of the European ETCS train control system . For this purpose, a central control system (TCC) was set up in Gävle, which is connected to 54 local property monitoring units (OCs) via GSM-R . In addition, 154 Eurobalises were installed. With the introduction of the system, nine signal boxes along the route should be able to be dismantled.

The existing safety technology of the line was considered obsolete at the time. Eight pairs of trains ran each day.

For the 2011/12 timetable change, the last passenger train ran from Malung to Borlänge on December 10, 2011. Finally, in January 2013, freight traffic on the route approved for 100 km / h was stopped because the company RushRail , which had carried out the last traffic, was not able to retrofit the new train control system on its locomotives.

Thus, the entire railway line was without regular traffic. If necessary, Vansbro was served by Green Cargo . In October 2013, Trafikverket proposed to stop the maintenance of the line between Rågsveden and Malung. If the authorities surveyed agree, the route will continue to exist for three years without maintenance and without being allowed to be driven. After these three years, if there is no longer any need for the section, the line will be closed for good.

In 2014, the Malung train station was restored and timber traffic resumed as required. The newspaper Dala-Democrats reported in July 2015 that the municipality of Malung had the old timber loading terminal in Malungsfors cleared at its own expense so that the site could be used again for rail loading. In January 2016 there was a meeting between representatives of the Malung-Sälen municipality and the Minister of Infrastructure Anna Johansson to talk about the future of the timber loading area in Malungsfors and possibly achieve an early reopening.

In the summer of 2017, Trafikverket invested SEK 48 million in reopening the railway line from Rågsveden. It was planned that the timber loading terminal in Malungsfors would reopen in the following year. In the meantime, the date has been postponed to summer 2019. With a celebration in Malungsfors and the departure of the first freight train, the Ragsveden – Malungsfors railway was put back into operation on August 20, 2019.
