The Vanån flows into the Västerdalälven in Vansbro

Vansbro is a place ( Tatort ) in the Swedish province of Dalarnas län and the capital of the municipality of the same name. The place is 82 km west of Borlänge at the mouth of the Vanån in the Västerdalälven . Vansbro is best known for Vansbrosimningen , a long-distance swimming competition .

history

The settlement was first mentioned as Wahnbro or Wansbro in various texts from the early 18th century, including in a work by the naturalist Carl von Linné . The part of the name "Bro" ( Swedish bridge ) refers to a simple wooden bridge made of rafts over the Vanån. The confluence of these two rivers was of great importance for rafting and thus for the timber industry in the entire region. Apart from the workers on the rafts and ferrymen , few people initially settled in Vansbro.

Origin of the railway lines

The situation changed after plans for a railway line became known. The urbanization has proved difficult because the forest was very dense and each spring a flood tide threatened. After the construction of the railway line, which is part of Inlandsbanan , the population consisted mainly of railway workers and people with professions related to the railway. In contrast to other up-and-coming railway locations, which were often equipped with a pompous train station, Vansbro initially only had a wooden station building on the route from Mora to Lake Vänern . After that, the traffic conditions improved significantly. In 1892 a branch line to Malung was built . Vansbro was then involved in the planning of new railway lines. In 1898 another stretch from Ludvika via Ängelsberg to Vansbro (now part of Västerdalsbanan ) received building permission. Construction was delayed until 1907, as the surrounding towns required a connection to this line. A modern train station had already been built before this point in time, as the old wooden structure was destroyed by fire in 1898. The new citizens came from Dalarna itself, but the majority moved here from Värmland . Often they simply followed the construction of the railway. In 1934 the new route was extended along the Västerdalälven to Särna .

In 1969 the part of the Inlandsbanan, which runs through Vansbro, was closed, but the supply is still carried out by the Västerdal Railway. The disused section can now be used by tourists with bicycle trolleys .

In addition to the train, there are now various bus routes that run mainly in an east-west direction.

industrialization

Along with the railway, several sawmills sprang up in Vansbro, which resulted in further population growth. Local history researcher Karl-Erik Forsslund described Vansbro in his book Wanån, Järna, Nås as follows: "... a large and busy railway and industrial estate that has grown almost at American speed".

education

The local grammar school is characterized by programs typical of the landscape, such as mountain hiking tourism and cycling.
