Borlänge is the largest city in the Swedish province of Dalarna County and the historic province of Dalarna . The main town of the municipality of the same name is traversed by the Dalälven river.

The city is an important industrial center and railway hub with one of four Swedish marshalling yards . Major employers are SSAB (metal industry) and Stora Enso Kvarnsveden Mill (paper industry), the main offices of the Swedish transport infrastructure authority Trafikverket and the railway department of the transport authority Transportstyrelsen (formerly Järnvägsstyrelsen) are also located in the city. Borlange is the location of the Dalarna University together with Falun . Dala Airport regional airport is located south of the city .

history

Archaeological finds show that iron was smelted by the rural population in the Borlänges area from the 8th century AD. Trade connections to the Mälaren area are documented from the Viking Age .

Borlänge is first mentioned in 1390 as Borlængio . The name probably refers to non-navigable rapids in the Dalälv, which one had to avoid overland, and means "the long carrying distance [for boats and freight]".

For a long time Borlänge remained an insignificant village within the municipality of Stora Tuna , which was the political and religious center of Dalarna in the Middle Ages. In the meantime, a bishopric should be established here, which explains the oversize of the Stora Tuna church . The economic development of Borlänges did not begin until the second half of the 19th century: in 1875 it was connected to the Swedish railway network with the Falun- Borlange- Ludvika railway, and in 1877 the Domnarvets Jernverk steelworks started operations. This triggered a strong population growth, and Borlänge was able to break away from the municipality of Stora Tuna in 1891 , when it received the status of a municipality hall and thus partial city rights . In 1898 the place was named Köping . In 1944, when Borlänges merged with the neighboring towns of Domnarvet and Kvarnsveden, which had also grown rapidly due to industrialization, the town of Borlänge was founded with around 18,000 inhabitants at the time. In 1971 the municipality of Stora Tuna, from which Borlänge once emerged, was incorporated into the city and the municipality of Borlänge was founded. Borlänge still belongs to the parish of Stora Tuna .

economy

For a long time Borlänge was strongly influenced by heavy industry, but since the 1980s the service sector has been increasingly expanded in connection with the decline of this branch of industry. Several authorities have been settled in the city, including the rail and road authorities. Most recently, with the construction of Framtidsdalen ( Zukunftstal ), a new focus was placed on modern technologies, research and training. The Dalarna University of Applied Sciences and various companies in the communications and transport sector are located in this new district. With the large dome-shaped shopping center Kupolen , Borlänge is now also Dalarna's largest shopping town.

Sports

The Borlangen football team IK Brage was represented for a long time in the Allsvenskan and the Swedish second division . The home games are played in the Domnarvsvallen stadium.

The Kurdish club Dalkurd FF , which was founded in 2004 to get young people off the streets, rose from 7th to the highest Swedish league within 13 years.

The women's team of the Borlänge HK handball club was three times Swedish champions.

Culture

Borlänge is home to several internationally known bands such as Mando Diao and Sugarplum Fairy . Between 1999 and 2012 the great music and culture festival Peace & Love took place in Borlänge, which has meanwhile been one of the largest festivals in Sweden with 25,000 visitors.
