Miss Li

Miss Li, 2009

Miss Li (born July 6, 1982 in Borlänge ; actually Linda Carlsson ) is a Swedish singer and pianist . Her music is characterized by a mixture of elements from jazz , pop , blues , soul , dark cabaret and country music .

She became known, among other things, for the diverse uses of her songs in American television series and commercials. Her song Don't Try to Fool Me was used in the television series Grey's Anatomy and Weeds - Little Deals Among Neighbors . In addition, the piece Bourgeois Shangri-La was used in a commercial for an Apple iPod and the piece Oh Boy in a commercial for a Volvo C70 .

Life

Even during her youth in her Swedish hometown, the industrial city of Borlänge , Miss Li experimented with music from various genres (including classical , jazz, hard rock , punk and metal ) and was active as a singer in various bands. With one of these bands she won a talent competition at the age of 17 against the then little-known Swedish rock band Sugarplum Fairy (which, like the band Mando Diao, comes from Borlange and how they would later become one of the most famous Swedish bands). However, since she did not feel comfortable in the small-town environment and found little opportunity for artistic activity, she moved to the Swedish capital Stockholm in 2005 .

After moving to Stockholm, she decided to make music herself, and for this purpose bought her own piano without further ado , which, however, was initially only able to use it sporadically due to a lack of practice. However, she soon made her first demo recordings and presented her songs at performances in smaller bars and clubs. At first she performed alone and accompanied herself on the piano. After this became too monotonous for her, she was able to convince two friends from her hometown to start a band.

With Clas Lassbo on double bass and Gustav Nahlin on drums, Miss Li then recorded her first single (with the up-tempo song "Oh Boy"), as well as her debut album Late Night Heartbroken Blues . Both were released in November 2006 on the Swedish independent label National Records . For one title on the album she was able to win Sonny Boy Gustafsson, the singer and guitarist of the Swedish rock band Captain Murphy , as a duet partner; he was finally accepted as a guitarist in the band and (after the breakup of his own band) was also instrumental in the songwriting of the later albums.

In April 2007 Miss Li sang a duet with the Swedish-Japanese musician Maia Hirasawa on their debut album Though, I'm Just Me . In September 2007 she took on another guest appearance together with the Swedish singer and songwriter Lars Winnerbäck for his album Daugava on a duet with the title "Om du lämnade mig nu" ( Sw. "If you left me now"), which as The single reached number one in the Swedish singles charts , stayed there for over a year and brought Miss Li and Winnerbäck a Grammis award in the Best Song category in 2007 .

After the second album God Put a Rainbow in the Sky was released in May 2007 - only six months after the release of the debut album - Miss Li released her third album Songs of a Rag Doll in October of the same year . In addition, shortly afterwards in December 2007 - only 13 months after their first album release - the first best-of album, Best of 061122-071122 , was released, which also contained eight new songs.

After several major tours that followed, including Sweden, Germany , France , Russia and the United States , another self-titled best-of album was released in October 2008, limited for the German market. In addition, Miss Li was nominated again this year for a Grammis award in the category of best female interpreter . In March 2009, the fourth studio album Dancing the Whole Way Home was finally released , which reached number eight in the Swedish charts.

In March 2011, the fifth studio album Beats & Bruises was released. The following month Miss Li went on a tour of Sweden.

The sixth studio album Tangerine Dream was released in Sweden in October 2012 and was also released in Germany in September 2013. In November 2013 a tour through Germany took place, in which "Tangerine Dream" was presented. In addition, for the first time visitors to the concerts had the opportunity to purchase the seventh studio album "Wolves".

The double album "Wolves" was released in Sweden in spring 2013 and later in other Scandinavian countries.

At the beginning of 2015 Miss Li wrote the song Don't Stop Believing in collaboration with her husband Sonny Gustafsson , with which the Swedish artist Mariette competed in the national preliminary round of the Eurovision Song Contest. This and another song that Miss Li wrote with her husband for the Swedish comedy "Hallonbåtsflyktingen" helped her to gain international attention, which ultimately led to her signing a contract as an international songwriter with Sonny Gustafsson and another Swedish producer .

collaboration

Miss Li was involved as a co- author in the production of Lena Meyer-Landrut's Stardust album and is a duet partner on the song ASAP . On November 22, 2019, Close Your Eyes, a single by the German DJ Felix Jaehn and the music project Vize , also from Germany , was released , in which Li appeared as a guest singer . The electro pop piece about health psychology reached number 69 in the single charts in Germany and became Li's second chart success as an interpreter after Plastic Faces . It is already her 15th chart success in her home country . As an author, Close Your Eyes is Li's fourth chart success in Germany.
