action

season 1

The series takes place in a fictional California suburb called Agrestic until season three . It is the home of Nancy Botwin, a housewife and mother. She lost her husband just before season one began. He was jogging with her son, Shane, and had a heart attack . Nancy's children, Shane and Silas, both attend Agrestic Public School.

After the death of her husband, Nancy begins dealing in marijuana in order to maintain her standard of living. She sources her marijuana from Heylia James, an African American and a big beast in the drug business. Her nephew Conrad and Nancy quickly become friends.

Nancy soon finds herself in a tight spot because she only has cash . Her tax advisor, whom she uses with drugs, advises her to go to a front company to launder the cash and transfer it to her account. Nancy takes up this plan and opens her own bakery. At the same time, her son Silas starts dating the deaf Megan, while her younger son, Shane, regularly causes trouble at school and is not yet able to cope with the loss of a father. As a result, Shane is nicknamed Strange Botwin at school .

Nancy also has to keep her drug deals a secret from her neighbors, especially Celia Hodes, a slightly depressed housewife whose husband cheats on her and whose daughters she hate. Her 15-year-old daughter Quinn is in a relationship with Nancy's son Silas until the pilot episode of the series and also sleeps with him in the first episode. Celia sends Quinn to boarding school in Mexico , ending her relationship with Silas. Celia's second daughter, 11-year-old Isabelle, is overweight and during the course of the story she quickly plays with the idea of being a lesbian. Towards the end of the first season, Celia was diagnosed with breast cancer. Before her operation to have her breasts removed, she sleeps with Conrad, who she believes is a craftsman who helps Nancy set up her bakery.

Around the middle of the first season, Nancy's brother-in-law Andy appears on the scene. He nests in Nancy's house and quickly discovers her drug dealer's secret. When he is about to be called up for military service, he finds himself in a bind. He decides to become a rabbi and enrolls in the rabbinical seminary .

Nancy expands to a nearby college by expanding her sales area and makes a lot of money. Her son, Shane, bites his opponent in the foot at a karate tournament; that's how she meets the boy's father, Peter Scottson. The two begin to get closer and sleep together at the end of the season. In the last scene (in the film: the following morning) Nancy discovers that Peter is a drug investigator .

season 2

The second season follows exactly at the end of the first season when Nancy discovers that her lover is a drug investigator. She is surprised and horrified and tries to avoid him. She and Conrad set up her own business behind his aunt's back.

It involves even more people in its business; Andy, Doug, and Sanjay, an Indian college student. As the season progresses, Nancy's lover, Peter Scottson, confesses that he knows about her drug dealing and will do everything in his power to protect her. For example, in the neighborhood in which Nancy and Conrad set up a drug farm, there is a raid from which only Nancy is spared. She can continue to deal undetected. Peter keeps asking Nancy to trust him and eventually the two of them secretly marry so he doesn't have to testify in court.

Meanwhile, Celia defeats cancer and runs for a position on the city council. She contests Doug's place there and wants to keep Agrestic clean and drug-free. Doug and Celia start an affair.

Silas and Megan's relationship is torn apart when Megan plans to move to Princeton . Silas is so eager to stay with her that he even manipulates condoms and thereby makes Megan pregnant. However, this leads to an altercation with Megan's parents who urge her to have an abortion and cut the relationship off.

Andy tries to have a relationship with a sexually attractive teacher at the rabbinical college. However, the lady is very dominant and uses, among other things, a strap-on dildo on Andy. When there is an accident at the drug farm in which a dog bites off two toes, Andy sees rescue from the military and decides not to take up the rabbi office.

As the season progresses, the kids begin to hear about Nancy's business. In addition, Andy's ex-girlfriend Kat appears, a crazy woman who wants to go to Pittsburgh with Shane at the end of the season . Nancy and Peter's relationship worsens when he tries to urge her to get out of the drug business. Peter overhears Nancy wants to leave him and demands the proceeds from a final sale of the last harvest. Heylia has Peter murdered.

The buyer, U-Turn, demands the entire harvest while the Killer Peters await their payment. To get himself into business, at the end of the season, Silas steals his mother's outstanding (so-called) MILF grass , a special mixture from Conrad that sells extremely well, and hides it in the car. Celia confronts Silas with the police for stealing her anti-drug signs and surveillance cameras.

The season ends with Nancy being threatened with guns by the drug dealers and killers.

season 3

After Silas' arrest, Celia drives home his car and discovers the grass hidden in it, which she destroys. U-Turn pays the killer Peters and makes Nancy dependent on him. Since the weed can no longer be sold, Nancy has to work off her debt with U-Turn.

Silas starts selling weed and befriends the fundamentalist Christian Tara, who also gets into the business. Shane and Isabelle, Celia's daughter, become friends because they are both misfits in school.

Heylia and Conrad started a gang war between U-Turn's group and Mexicans. U-Turn suffers a heart attack while jogging and is strangled by his gang member Marvin, whereupon the latter takes the lead. Nancy and Marvin meet with the Mexican gang leader, Guillermo, to end the gang war. Nancy cleverly manages to get rid of her debts.

The neighboring municipality of Majestic wants to take over Agrestic, which Doug, who is now back on the corrupt council of Agrestic, wants to prevent by acts of sabotage so that his embezzlement is not exposed. Celia's husband Dean has a motorcycle accident and becomes a nursing care case, which further alienates Celia from him, while her daughter Isabelle supports her father.

Silas works with Conrad on growing marijuana; Andy comes into contact with a biker gang through a girl who forces him to sell their weed. But since it is of poor quality, there are no buyers. Nancy tries to cut ties with the gang, which results in Silas being beaten up. She seeks protection from Guillermo, the leader of the Mexican drug gang. Guillermo burns down the bikers' drug plantation, causing a conflagration across Agrestic. Nancy sets fire to her home to wipe out all traces of the drug trade and break the bridges behind her.

The season ends with the evacuation of Agrestic residents, with police discovering Nancy's greenhouse.

Season 4

Nancy and her family flee south to the fictional town of Ren Mar, right on the border with Mexico. There everyone finds shelter in Andy's father's house. Nancy is instructed in border smuggling by Guillermo, while Andy and Doug, who has also fled, attempt to smugglers.

Since everyone testified against Celia, she goes to prison. Dean moves to Detroit with daughter Isabelle . After a while, Celia convinces the police that Nancy and Guillermo are actually behind the drug deal and is released on condition that they provide evidence. She comes to Ren Mar and observes a meeting between Nancy and Guillermo, is caught doing it, but rescued by Nancy shortly before she is murdered. From now on she works as a saleswoman with Nancy in a drug gang's cover shop. They discover a connecting tunnel to Mexico in a back room.

Nancy's job as a saleswoman is too boring and she wants to get back into the drug trade, but Guillermo refuses her weed. Nancy then drives to Tijuana , the city across the border, to meet Esteban, the head of the drug gang, in person. This turns out to be the local mayor, attracted by Nancy's research and sexual charisma, and allows her to sell drugs. The two enter into a relationship.

Nancy finds out that the tunnel is used not only for marijuana but also for hard drugs, guns, and human trafficking . Shocked , she informs DEA agent Till on the condition that she will not be punished. In the following raid, Guillermo, among others, is arrested.

Esteban learns that Nancy betrayed the tunnel to the police and wants to have them killed. Only the fact that Nancy is pregnant by Esteban saves her from death.

Season 5

After Esteban learns Nancy is pregnant, he lets her live. However, Nancy is now guarded by Esteban's bodyguards and has to be examined whether the baby is actually Esteban's son. To keep Shane safe, Nancy sends him and Andy to her sister Jill Price-Gray (played by Jennifer Jason Leigh ) in northern California. Shane and Andy are brought back by Jill later in the episode because Shane took photos of Jill and Andy having sex.

Meanwhile, Silas worries about starting a legal medical marijuana business that Nancy is promoting. Esteban's bodyguard suddenly disappears; then Nancy panics because she suspects that he was killed.

Quinn's attempts to extort money for Celia fail because none of her friends or family members want to pay for her. Her plan to sell her mother's organs also doesn't work because Celia has had chemotherapy. This led to an argument between Quinn and her boyfriend Rudolfo, which ended the relationship.

Celia tries to “work” for Rudolfo and live with him, but Rudolfo drugged her and sent her on a bus to Texas. Without any other perspective, she spends the night in their garage without Nancy's consent and finds the body of the dead bodyguard there.

The new bodyguard intercepts DEA agent Captain Roy Till while observing Nancy's house, who then calls Esteban to have Till killed. Andy tries to persuade Nancy to flee with the $ 180,000 he has in Judah's safe deposit box. But she decides to move with the children to Esteban.

Six months later, Esteban proposes to Nancy, which she accepts, but Pilar, a respected woman in Mexican politics, demands that Esteban cut ties with Nancy. Cesar, a close colleague of Esteban, is setting up a birthing room in the house so that nothing of a baby can appear in public. Nancy escapes with Andy's help, see her gynecologist and gives birth to the baby in a hospital. In order not to endanger his political career, Esteban refuses to sign the birth certificate. Nancy moves back to Andy, who is registered as father in the deed and hopes that she can get away from Esteban. Andy organizes a circumcision for the little one, against Esteban's will.

Season 6

After Shane kills Pilar, the botwins flee to Seattle and assume false identities as the Newman family. Andy, Silas and Nancy work there for a short time in a hotel. In the meantime, Shane takes care of Stevie. Nancy tries to make and sell hash, but the FBI and Esteban's men are on her tail. At some point, Esteban's men find the family in a motel and they also have Doug with them. Nancy manages to overpower Cesar and escapes one more time, but they are now traveling through the United States in a motor home.

Nancy drives her family to her old math teacher. Shane and Silas let themselves be told a lot about their mother, including that Nancy had a boyfriend who looked a lot like Silas now. Silas decides to visit him and finds out that Nancy's school friend is actually his father. Nancy visits her parents' grave, where she approaches a man who claims to have gone to the same school with her. It later emerges that he is a journalist documenting Nancy's story. For a fee of about $ 5,000, Nancy reveals some important facts. Andy organizes false passports to flee to Europe. Nancy's former math teacher Warren robbed a Postbank and used the money to buy tickets for everyone. At the airport, Esteban and Guillermo want to take Nancy and Stevie back to Mexico. Nancy sacrifices herself, makes sure that her family gets on the plane and follows Esteban and Guillermo out of the airport with Stevie. When returning to the car, however, as Nancy intended, they are arrested by the FBI and Nancy confesses to having killed Pilar.

Season 7

Three years later, Nancy is released from prison in Connecticut and is housed in a so-called halfway house in New York, where she is to be reintegrated into society. When Andy, Silas and Shane find out about Nancy's dismissal, they travel back to America from Copenhagen to see her, mainly because of Shane's belief.

Nancy is now trying to get Stevie back, who was placed with her sister while she was in prison. However, she wants to adopt the little one by all means. Nancy tries to regain her son's custody with lawyers, but Jill blackmails Nancy by giving up her drug business. Silas, who has had some success as a model in Copenhagen, is planning on marijuana again in America and this time wants to be his own boss and not Nancy's henchman, which leads to an argument. Shane is supposed to go to college at his mother's insistence, but is offered an internship with a police chief and gets information about Nancy's competitors, which does not go undetected. Towards the end of the season, he decides to quit and signs up with the Police Academy. Two months later, the Botwin family was sitting at the dining table at a barbecue party with the family of Nancy's sister, when a shooter aimed a gun at Nancy's head. When a shot rings out, the picture fades into the credits.

Season 8

Nancy wakes up in the hospital and begins rehab in which she has to learn to walk again. She changes her mind and does not want to take any more money from those in need. Shane sets out to find the shooter. The shooter turns out to be the son of Peter Scottson, the dead DEA agent and Nancy's ex-husband. Shane, who is now with the police himself, arrests him to Nancy's surprise.

Andy marries a waitress, but quickly becomes unhappy. He confesses his love to Nancy when, while visiting the former Agrestic, the two of them take a nightly walk where Nancy's first husband died. There is a quickie on the lawn of a front yard, then Andy takes flight.

Later in the season, with the help of a tobacco company, Silas and Nancy set up their own company to buy land in California and, with the help of Conrad and Guillermo, grow weed in order to be prepared if it should one day be legalized. Doug founds a sect with a group of homeless people for tax reasons, and from then on acts as their guru.

The series ends after a leap in time of seven years at Stevie's Bar Mitzvah . Shane is a police officer, but an alcoholic. Jill lives in India. Andy hasn't been in touch with Nancy since the nightly episode and doesn't see her again until the party. Like Conrad, Silas, Guillermo and Doug, Nancy has become a millionaire thanks to the now legal grass chain. Together they decide to accept an offer from Starbucks to buy their company. Before the bar mitzvah celebration, Guillermo informs Stevie about his father and his criminal activities, whereupon Stevie provokes a scandal with his speech in the synagogue.

In the final scene Andy and Nancy smoke a joint with Silas, Shane and Doug after Stevie's party, at which many old faces could be seen.
