Relationship with El Chapo

In early 2012, Kate del Castillo caused a stir with an address of allegiance to the drug lord El Chapo by tweeting "I believe more in Chapo Guzmán today than in the governments that do nothing and withhold truths". Guzmán then sent contact persons to Castillo, and as a result there were at least sporadic contacts between the two.

She hit the headlines again in late 2015 when she was involved in arranging an October 2015 interview for Sean Penn for Rolling Stone magazine with Chapo at a secret location in Mexico. According to Castillo, however, everyone involved - with the exception of Sean Penn - thought that it should be about a film adaptation of El Chapo's life. He had given her the film rights. Exchanged SMS messages ultimately led the police allegedly to track down Guzmán and to arrest him in January 2016. Guzmán had previously escaped from a Mexican maximum security prison in July 2015. While Sean Penn was largely unknown to the drug lord, he was a fan of Castillo, who is a telenovela star in Mexico, and was dying to meet her. In his hiding place DVDs of Castillo's television series such as La Reina del Sur (“The Queen of the South”) were found, where she plays a boss in the Sinaloa cartel in Guzmán.

As a result of the meeting, Castillo, who lives in the USA, received a subpoena from the Mexican authorities. Because she did not comply, the public prosecutor in Mexico City issued an arrest warrant.
