Antonio Banderas
Antonio Banderas (born August 10, 1960 in Málaga as José Antonio Domínguez Bandera ) is one of the most famous contemporary Spanish actors , who also works as a film director and partly as a singer and guitarist .
Life
Antonio Banderas is the older of two sons of the policeman José Domínguez Prieto (1920–2008) and the teacher Ana Bandera Gallego (1933–2017). He wanted to be a footballer but suffered a leg injury at the age of fourteen. Instead, Banderas started acting, which soon became his new passion. After training as an actor at the Málaga drama school ESAD , he first played on various stages in Madrid , later he also received film roles. He played in several national film and television productions, partly directed by Pedro Almodóvar . In 1992 he had a leading role in the film Mambo Kings and then moved to the United States.
He added an “s” to his mother's surname, Bandera (“flag”) for the credits of his very first film in 1981 (Laberinto de pasiones (1982), D: Pedro Almodóvar) for political motives to add to the credits The Spanish national flag also recognizes Catalonia , the Basque Country and Andalusia - its regions of origin. ("Back then, the Spanish flag was a big deal for me, and I wasn't a centralist, so I added the s.", New York, May 2004)
Occasionally, Banderas also works as a film director. In 1999 he directed his debut film Crazy in Alabama with Melanie Griffith and other actors. His second work, " El camino de los ingleses ", a story about growing up in the 1970s, was shown at the 2007 Berlinale .
In 2010, Banderas became a “Goodwill” ambassador to the United Nations , the United Nations development program for campaigns against poverty, environmental protection and the safeguarding of women's rights.
From 1988 to 1996 he was married to Ana Leza . After his divorce, he married the US actress Melanie Griffith in May 1996 , with whom he has a daughter. Griffith separated from him in spring 2014 and filed for divorce in summer 2014. The divorce has been final since December 2015.
On January 26, 2017, Banderas suffered a heart attack, after which he was placed in a Swiss hospital with three stents .
In 2020, the lead role of the aged film director Salvador Mallo in Pedro Almodóvar's feature film Sorrow and Glory earned him Oscar and Golden Globe Award nominations .
Trivia
In 1995 he was ranked 24th on the list of the “sexiest film stars” by Empire magazine, and in 1996 he was voted among the “50 most beautiful people in the world” by American People magazine.
In 2003 he played successfully on Broadway in the musical Nine at the side of Chita Rivera , for which he was nominated for a Tony Award received.
A few years earlier he sang the song Phantom of the Opera from the musical of the same name with Sarah Brightman very successfully. He also sang all the passages in the film Evita himself, but said in an interview with “You + me” magazine that he was not and never would be a professional singer. In the meantime, only one CD was released, on which only instrumental music can be heard.
On October 18, 2005, Antonio Banderas was allowed to unveil his own star (number 2294) on the sidewalk of the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
