action

The young Antonio loves the filmmaker Pablo and his sister Tina, who has been sexually reassigned. Pablo, for his part, vies for Juan, who doesn't want to know anything from him. When Antonio finds an alleged love letter from Juan to Pablo, he visits Juan and kills him. Antonio contacts Tina while the police investigate the murder. When Antonio is staying with Tina, Pablo realizes who the killer is and he warns Tina. The police alerted by Pablo surround Tina's house, while Pablo can be exchanged as a hostage for Tina. After an act of love with Pablo, Antonio shoots himself.

reception

  • The kitschy melodrama offers the provocations that Almodóvar disciples expect from their master: homophilia, transsexuality and incest. ... All of this takes place in the avant-garde art scene in Madrid and ends (of course ?!) in murder and manslaughter. Until then, however, the full life is presented on the screen. (Film review on tvspielfilm.de)
  • “Pedro Almodóvar, the eccentric among Spain's directors, who is now established as an Oscar winner, deliberately exaggerated this garish and sometimes deliberately kitsch triangular drama about homosexuality and gender swapping. So this is a rough tightrope walk between fat and repulsiveness. " (Film review on prisma-online.de)
  • “The tragically ending love triangle between three men and the story of two brothers, one of whom became a woman after a sex change. A drastic, shrill and sometimes vulgarly staged film, intended as a study of loneliness and passion; in his tightrope walk between kitschy and repulsive details unsatisfactory and extremely ambivalent. " ( Lexicon of international films )
