Carmen Maura

Carmen García Maura (born September 15, 1945 in Madrid , Spain ) is a Spanish actress . She was best known for her collaboration with the director Pedro Almodóvar . She is a descendant of the conservative Spanish politician Antonio Maura Montaner .

Life

Maura first acted as a theater actress during her studies. Activities as director of an art gallery and as a television presenter followed. She first appeared in short films at the end of the 1960s. After supporting roles in several television series and feature films she had in Fernando Colomos Comedy paper tiger in 1977 its first successful role. Although she also took on some dramatic roles, she enjoyed some success in the 1980s, mostly with comedies.

In 1978 Maura started working with Pedro Almodóvar. Almodóvar's films Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del montón (1980), The Monastery of Holy Madness (1983), How did I deserve it? (1984), Matador (1986) and The Law of Desire (1987) followed. She received the Goya and Felix for the 1988 Oscar- nominated comedy Women on the Edge of a Nervous Breakdown , where she starred alongside Antonio Banderas . She won Felix in 1991 for Carlos Sauras Ay Carmela! - Song of Freedom a second time. She also won her second Goya for the same role. The third Goya followed in 2001 for Alone Among Neighbors - La comunidad . For Pedro Almodóvar's Volver - Return , she received the award for Best Supporting Actress at the 21st Goya Awards and, in 2006, together with her film colleagues Penélope Cruz , Lola Dueñas , Blanca Portillo , Yohana Cobo and Chus Lampreave, the actor 's award at the 59th Cannes International Film Festival . In 2007, she was for her life's work with the Excellence Award of the Locarno Film Festival awarded. This was followed in 2012 for Maura's portrayal of a Spanish maid in Philippe Le Guy’s French comedy For Staff Only! (2010) a César as best supporting actress . In 2013 she received another prize for her life's work, the Donostia of the Festival of San Sebastián .

In 2018 she was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
