The Portuguese João sells pornographic videos to rest stops and petrol stations in Spain. He is married with one child, but is rarely with his family because of his work.
One day he sees a woman walking down the street. He drives out at the next rest stop and waits for the woman to arrive. The Spaniard between forty and fifty, who introduces herself as Berta, asks him to take her with him to Lisbon . João takes Berta for a while, but lets her get out under a bridge. When he notices that she has left her handbag with a pistol in it, he pulls back.
At a gas station, João calls a number he has read in Berta's address book. A short time later, Berta's son appears at the gas station to take her home. When the woman refuses, her daughter Verónica and her children's grandfather also come. Verónica suspects that Berta wants to go to Lisbon to see Alvaro, a business partner of her husband, with whom she has had an affair for a long time. However, the day before he died in a car accident. Berta tells João that her family is probably to blame for Alvaro's death.
Berta's husband, José Luis, also comes to take his wife home. She continues to strictly refuse. João drives on towards Portugal, but turns around when he hears a recording on his cassette recorder on which Alvaro reports that José Luis is likely to kill him soon. Berta put the cassette in the recorder. João drives back and flees from her family with Berta. During the escape, João and Berta have sex in a parking garage.
A chase begins a few hours later. Berta's family manages to push João and her off the street. After everyone hears the recording of Alvaro, José Luis and a bodyguard beat up João. Everyone drives to a rest stop where João has left a key that Berta has given that leads to a locker in Lisbon. This locker seems to be of concern to José Luis. When Berta's husband received the key, he drives away with his wife. Before that, João can hand Berta her handbag, which contains her pistol. Berta shoots herself in the moving car.
