action

Madrid : Julia is a real estate agent in a real estate company. She visits an elegant multi-room apartment in an apartment building with potential clients. When they are not interested, she illegally spends a night there with her frustrated husband and witnesses the fire brigade forcibly opening the apartment above her. The apartment is full of rubbish and an old man's body that has already been nibbled on by a cat. The dead man must have been lying in the apartment for weeks. When the firefighters carry the body out of the apartment on a stretcher, a wallet falls out of his pocket. With presence of mind, Julia grabs the wallet and later discovers a treasure map in it. She sneaks into the abandoned apartment and finds 300 million pesetas in cash. She stows these in bags. However, this does not go unnoticed by the neighboring community. Julia gradually realizes that the entire community knows about the money. After some irrelevant banter between the community and Julia, she realizes that she cannot leave the building with the money. The neighbors are armed and ready for anything. They use brute force and soon two community members are dead. Shortly before his violent death, ringleader Emilio tells Julia about the entire story: The old man won the football pool because of a tip from Emilio and was then not ready to share with the others. Since then, the community has been guarding the apartment around the clock and the old man never left his home out of fear. Julia, who is not ready to give up the money, is fighting a life and death fight. She manages to leave the building alive, four other neighbors had to pay for the fight with their lives. In the end, Charly, a mentally somewhat limited but harmless neighbor who loves Julia, secures the money. After the parishioners were arrested, Julia reads a ciphered message addressed to her in the daily newspaper. Julia, who has separated from her husband, meets with the neighbor in a small café, where the neighbor celebrates and distributes the money among the guests.

criticism

The film, which was nominated for 15 Goyas and won three, received good reviews. Comparisons have been made with Roman Polanski's The Tenant , Rosemary's Baby, and Hitchcock films.

"De la Iglesia creates a dazzling panopticon of shrill types and thus sets a wonderful counterpoint to the lacquered casting of American genre films, in which even the smallest supporting roles are cast with smooth catalog faces"

- Kino.de

"With La Comunidad, Alex de la Iglesia succeeded in creating an original synthesis of allusions to film history and his own predilection for grueling bizarre things."
