The 31st European Film Awards ceremony took place on December 15, 2018 in Seville at the Teatro de la Maestranza . The six actors and actresses Rossy de Palma from Spain, Ashraf Barhom from Israel, Amira Casar from France, Anamaria Marinca from Romania, Ivan Shvedoff from Russia and Tom Wlaschiha from Germany acted as presenters for the gala . The prize is awarded by the European Film Academy (EFA).

As best European film was Cold War - The Latitude of Love by Pawel Pawlikowski excellent, which was nominated in five categories. The full nominations were announced on November 10, 2018 at the Seville European Film Festival . An eight-person jury decided on the awards in the categories Best Camera , Best Editing , Best Production Design , Best Costume Design , Best Hairstyling and Make-up, Best Film Music and Best Sound . For the first time, a prize was also awarded in the Visual Effects Supervisor category.

The Spanish actress Carmen Maura received the Lifetime Achievement Award , and Ralph Fiennes received the award for the best European performance in world cinema . In addition, the Greek-French filmmaker Costa-Gavras was honored with an honorary award.

The jury included cameraman Luca Bigazzi (Italy), film editor Dasha Danilova (Russia), visual effects supervisor Dadi Einarsson (Iceland), sound designer Mattias Eklund (Sweden), hair & make-up artist Marcelle Genovese (Malta), costume designer Malina Ionescu (Romania) , Production designer Monica Rottmeyer (Switzerland) and composer Christopher Slaski (UK).

The 15 nominated short films were selected by independent juries at 15 film festivals and announced on October 4, 2018. From these, the more than 3500 EFA members determined the winner, who was presented at the award ceremony on December 15, 2018.

European University Film Award (EUFA)

Based on the list of 49 feature films and the 15 documentaries, the following five films were selected for the newly created European University Film Award (EUFA) in 2016 . The nominated films were discussed at 22 universities in 22 countries, with each institution then choosing its favorite. In early December, a representative from each university attended a three-day meeting to determine the overall winner. This was announced on December 6, 2018. The aim of this initiative of the European Film Academy and the Hamburg Film Festival is to involve a younger audience, to spread the European idea, to convey the spirit of European cinema and to promote a culture of discussion.
