occupation

Borg / McEnroe (in German subtitle also duel two gladiators ) is a biography by Janus Metz , which celebrated its international premiere on September 7, 2017 as the opening film of the Toronto International Film Festival . The film is about the rivalry between tennis players Björn Borg and John McEnroe and shows a clash at the Wimbledon Championships in 1980 in the men's singles final.

action

The 24-year-old Swede Björn Borg is number one in the world tennis rankings in 1980 and four-time winner of the Wimbledon Championships . With his 5th title he would achieve something that no other tennis player has achieved before. Marked by his long career, he feels burned out and tired, but he still has to play one of the most important games of his life. Borg is set to face 20-year-old John McEnroe in a much-anticipated final game at Wimbledon. The eccentric newcomer from the USA is just as hot-headed as he is, which in a way connects them. Borg is preparing for the tennis tournament with the help of his trainer Lennart Bergelin. McEnroe, on the other hand, keeps making new headlines, and the media keep the rivalry between the two tennis players in the foreground in their coverage of the upcoming men's singles final.

production

The shooting took place in Södertälje, Sweden , where Björn Borg grew up and played tennis as a child

Staff and cast

The planning of a film about the tennis players Björn Borg and John McEnroe became known in May 2016 and that Janus Metz would direct and Ronnie Sandahl would write the script. Jon Nohrstedt and Fredrik Wikström Nicastro acted as producers . The film music was composed by Jonas Struck , Vladislav Delay , Jon Ekstrand and Carl-Johan Sevedag . At the end of September 2017, Struck and Delay released the soundtrack for the film as a download.

In May 2016 it was announced that Sverrir Guðnason and Shia LaBeouf will take on the roles of Björn Borg and John McEnroe . Stellan Skarsgård plays Borg's coach Lennart Bergelin in the film . On August 16, 2016, actors Tuva Novotny and Robert Emms joined the crew, who play Mariana Simionescu and Vitas Gerulaitis in the film .

In the film, Metz shows the days before the tournament and its course, combined with numerous flashbacks to the youth of both players, which gives the story a wonderful depth, says Piet Bosse from tennis MAGAZIN , and Borg's life path in particular is detailed in his key moments, which up to going back to childhood. In several of these flashbacks, Borg's son Leo plays him as a twelve-year-old.

John McEnroe did not like the film, and after criticizing the actors' lack of contact in advance, he found the story to be partly wrong and too dramatic. Björn Borg, on the other hand, found words of praise for the sports drama, according to Piet Bosse, even if, according to Borg, the relationship with his trainer Lennart Bergelin in a conflict situation was not portrayed completely truthfully, because a scene in which Bergelin beats the teenager Borg is supposed to be in reality never happened.

Filming and publishing

Filming started in August 2016. The film was shot in Gothenburg , Stockholm , Prague , London and Monaco . Further recordings were made in Borg's hometown Södertälje near Stockholm, where the tennis player grew up and played tennis as a child. In Prague, the film was shot in the Štvanice Stadium, which in the film served as the backdrop for the Center Court in Wimbledon , where the 1980 final took place. The production costs were around 65 million Swedish kronor.

The film premiered internationally on September 7, 2017 as the opening film of the Toronto International Film Festival and was released in cinemas in the United Kingdom on September 22, 2017. In September 2017 the film was also screened at the San Sebastián International Film Festival . At the end of September 2017, the film opened the Zurich Film Festival in the presence of Roger Federer . The cinema release in Germany took place on October 19, 2017. In October and November 2017, the film was shown as part of the official competition at the Festa del Cinema di Roma, where it was awarded the audience award.

The film is distributed by Nordisk Film in Scandinavia and internationally by SF Studios, has been sold in more than 150 countries and opened in US theaters on April 13, 2018.

Reviews and grossing results

Shia LaBeouf at the premiere for the film at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival

The film received a fairly positive rating from 84 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics (out of a total of 140 critics). Variety's Peter Debruge says that while playing tennis may not be the best use of Shia LaBeouf's talents, he, who is a controversial person even off-screen, is fantastic in his role. Even Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian believes LaBeouf was not only a good fit for this role, but also because it in case of victory may represent the only possible McEnroe Aufbrodeln and its excitement credible enough. Urs Bühler from the Neue Zürcher Zeitung says that even if LaBeouf is not the most obvious cast at first glance, he then takes on the familiar role of enfant terrible : “He adapts some of his compatriot's ticks on and off the pitch with astonishing precision . "

Screen International's Fionnuala Halligan , however, says the film is more Borg than McEnroe thanks to a fascinating portrayal of the doppelganger Sverrir Gudnason .

Dominik Kamalzadeh from derStandard.at says that the athlete psycho box is full of clichés, but at least keeps you happy with funny hairstyles and colored details such as retro sweatbands until the film finally shows tennis in an exciting finish.

Piet Bosse from tennis MAGAZIN says that the director specifically paid attention to technical subtleties in the tennis game and that the film takes place in a very contemporary setting: “Both the props and the environment exude the charm of the eighties.” Bosse says about the selection of actors that this was done extremely well, and Sverrir Gudnason and Shia LaBoeuf were very similar to the main characters. Bosse sums up that it is a coherent feature film that succeeds in transporting and conveying the emotions. The film is not just something for tennis fans, every general sports fan and tennis layman can easily find their way into this drama, says Bosse. The only drawback Bosse mentions in his criticism is the German dubbing: “The original version linguistically varies between Swedish and English , which creates a fascinating atmosphere. The recipient has the feeling of being there live. "

Patrick Heidmann from epd Film thinks that the film is characterized by an unnecessary overdramatization that inflates the meaning of the encounter between the two players to a dimension that seems excessive. The bombastic film music underscores this in an unfavorable way. When the final is finally reached and the film concentrates entirely on the five-sentence tennis match, Heidmann says, it develops an astonishingly compelling tension: “This sport has never been so gripping and authentic on screen seen what, in addition to Metz and his actors, is mainly due to their doubles and the outstanding work of the two editors Per K. Kirkegaard and Per Sandholt . "

The worldwide revenue of the film from theatrical screenings so far amounts to around 2.8 million US dollars.
