The 2017 Toronto International Film Festival has kicked off with a screening of the biography Borg / McEnroe at the Scotiabank Theater

The 42nd Toronto International Film Festival took place September 7-17, 2017. For ten days, 340 films were shown at the film festival, including 147 world premieres. The director of the festival is Piers Handling. The films shown in the Gala Presentations and Special Presentations were announced at the end of July 2017. Most recently, the crime film Roman J. Israel, Esq. - The Truth and Nothing but the Truth has been included in the program by Dan Gilroy .

With the opening film Borg / McEnroe by Janus Metz and Battle of the Sexes - Against every rule by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris , two films were shown that portrayed former tennis players. Other featured biographies were I, Tonya by Craig Gillespie , Professor Marston & The Wonder Women by Angela Robinson , Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool by Paul McGuigan and Mary Shelley by Haifaa Al Mansour .

Other films that celebrated their world premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival were the science fiction thriller Thelma by Joachim Trier and Between Two Lives by Hany Abu-Assad . Furthermore, presented Brie Larson their comedy Unicorn Store before and Angelina Jolie film The long road of hope . In addition, a number of directorial debuts were presented, for example the actual screenwriter Aaron Sorkin visited the festival with his film Molly's Game - All on one card , Andy Serkis , known from his motion capture roles , presented the film As long as I breathe and the actor Simon Baker the film Breath .

Films with German participation included, among others, Grenzlos by Wim Wenders , What will people say by Iram Haq , ¾ by Ilian Metev , Sommerhäuser by Sonja Maria Kröner , Arrhythmia by Boris Khlebnikov and Good Luck by Ben Russell. Valeska Grisebach presents the Contemporary World Cinema Competition their movie Western front, which is already in Cannes premiered, as well as out of nothing by Fatih Akin . Films with Austrian participation were Happy End by Michael Haneke and Licht by Barbara Albert . The films produced by Switzerland included Of Sheep and Men by Karim Sayad , Les Gardiennes (also The Guardians ) by Xavier Beauvois and Ta peau si lisse (also A Skin so Soft ) by Denis Côté .

The film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri by Martin McDonagh was honored with the Audience Award, the main awards of the festival .
