action

Photojournalist Alex Martin, whose wedding is due to take place the following day, and surgeon Ben Bass, who has to perform important surgery the next day, have the same destination. The flight was canceled because of a storm warning and they charter a small private plane. When the pilot tries to avoid a storm, he suffers a stroke and the plane crashes high in the snow-capped mountains. However, Alex, Ben and the pilot's dog survive the crash. Ben is the first to wake up and takes care of Alex's apparent broken leg. For the pilot, however, any help comes too late and Ben buries him in the snow.

They manage to start a fire and so they stay in the wreckage of the plane for a few days, hoping to be saved. When the food is getting scarce and Alex no longer believes in salvation, she sends Ben to get help. Not getting far, Ben loses his footing and falls down a slope. Shortly before the fall, a rock stopped him.

Meanwhile, a puma enters the plane. Alex can drive him off at the last moment with a shot from the flare gun. The dog that was attacked by the puma is only slightly injured. Ben returns to the plane and explains to Alex that he nearly crashed and that it is too dangerous to get help. The puma, which the dog had fatally injured and which is not far from the aircraft, serves as food.

When after a long time there is still no prospect of help, Alex suggests taking the risk and leaving the wreck. Ben disagrees, whereupon Alex finally sets off on his own one morning, leaving Ben behind. Ben follows her shortly afterwards and can catch up with her. On their way, the two, who are actually completely strangers, have to survive under extreme conditions in the remote, snow-capped mountains and repeatedly challenge each other to hold out. Ben always tries to encourage Alex by talking to him. When asked about his marriage, Ben evades the questions. It is obvious that he has a secret with him. One day, through the telephoto lens of her camera, Alex sees an object flashing in a valley and they decide to walk towards it.

When they finally arrive in the valley, exhausted and at the end of their tether, Ben wakes up to the loud barking of the dog and recognizes an abandoned hunting lodge. Happy to have apparently survived the hardest, Ben runs towards it. Alex, still handicapped by her injuries, has to recover from the exertion. Too late she realizes that she is standing on the ice of a frozen lake, which slowly gives way under the strain and breaks into the ice-cold water. At the last moment Ben is able to save the unconscious Alex and carries her into the hut. There, by the fire, Ben tells Alex about his wife who fell ill with a brain tumor and ultimately died from it. Alex, who has long been drawn to Ben, can no longer hide her feelings, and they spend a passionate night together.

Even though Alex asked Ben to go further without her for help, he still takes her with him. At the end of her tether, Ben discovers a timber factory not too far away. On the way there, he kicks a leghold trap and is seriously injured. Unable to open the trap, Alex tries to get help from the loggers and collapses on the floor in front of a truck. Ben wakes up in a hospital and visits Alex in her hospital room, where he meets Alex's fiancé. Visibly disappointed, Ben says goodbye and both go their own way again.

Ben is working as a doctor again in London and Alex in New York. But Alex can't forget Ben and tries to contact him. However, Ben rejects her because he thinks that Alex has long been married and that he doesn't want to experience the pain of separation again. When Ben receives photos from Alex that remind him of moments of their exertion, he calls Alex and they arrange to meet in a New York restaurant. Ben learns that Alex has not married and that she is now working as a part-time teacher, as she is traumatized by the plane crash. Ben explains why he didn't call back. After saying goodbye in front of the restaurant and it looks like a final farewell, they both turn around and hug.

reception

Age rating

In the US, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA . In Germany the film is FSK 12 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “The overall calmly staged film contains some dramatic scenes of tension, but in which there is no physical violence. In addition, numerous quiet passages offer children and young people from the age of 12 enough opportunities to relax. The venue in snow-covered wilderness makes it easy for viewers aged 12 and over to separate the story from their own living environment and to maintain an emotional distance. "

Reviews

Walli Müller from NDR Info describes the film as a survival drama in which the focus is not so much on the physical struggle for survival, but more on the psychological dynamics within an involuntary community of fate. The transition from survival to romantic drama turned out to be a bit very bombastic, Müller continued, and it never gets really uncomfortable here in the cinema seat like in comparable films, in which the adventure was almost unbearable even for the audience: “Really Existential drama looks different, but Kate Winslet and Idris Elba are a movie couple like to watch. "

In a dpa review of the film, it can be read that the disaster drama swings back and forth between action and romance, but Kate Winslet and Idris Elba in the leading roles raise the film just above average.

Gross profit

The worldwide revenue of the film from theatrical screenings so far amounts to 62.7 million US dollars. The film recorded 152,938 visitors in Germany.
