Idrissa Akuna "Idris" Elba OBE (born September 6, 1972 in Hackney , London , England ) is a British actor , film producer and musician . He was nominated for numerous television awards for his portrayal of John Luther in the BBC television series Luther , including a Golden Globe in 2012 and a SAG award in 2016 .

Life

Idris Elba was born in the Hackney borough of London . His father is from Sierra Leone , his mother from Ghana . He lives in New York City and has a daughter and a son.

At the New Year's ceremony in 2016, Elba was appointed Officer of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth II . In June 2016 he was invited as one of 683 personalities by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a new member.

Among other things, Elba is actively involved in the development of the island of Sherbro in Sierra Leone .

Career

Elba made her debut in 1994 in an episode of the British television series 2point4 Children . In the French comedy My Beautiful Mother-in-Law (1999), he starred alongside Catherine Deneuve . From 2002 to 2004 Elba played the drug dealer and businessman Russel, Stringer 'Bell in the television series The Wire . For this role he was nominated for the Image Award in 2005. For the lead role in the television drama When the Murder Began (2005), he was nominated for the 2006 Black Reel Award , the Image Award and the Vision Award.

In the drama Daddy's Little Girls (2007) he played the role of the divorced auto mechanic Monty, who begins a relationship with the lawyer Julia ( Gabrielle Union ). In horror - thriller 28 Weeks Later (2007) he played the role of General Stone. In 2011 he took on the role of the sir god Heimdall in the comic book version Thor . He also took on this role in the following films Thor - The Dark Kingdom , Avengers: Age of Ultron , Thor: Decision Day and Avengers: Infinity War .

For the title role of a police officer in the television series Luther , he received a Golden Globe in 2012 and a SAG award in 2016 . In 2013 he played the leading role in the movie Mandela - The Long Road to Freedom . In 2016, he received the SAG Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as commander in the war drama Beasts of No Nation .

In January 2018 Elba presented his directorial debut with the film Yardie at the Sundance Film Festival . He also works as a DJ , performing under the names DJ Big Driis and Big Driis the Londoner . He has also worked as a designer at Superdry since 2015 . He was named Sexiest Man Alive by the American weekly People magazine in 2018 .

German voice actor

Elba is dubbed in the crime series Luther , the films Pacific Rim and Bastille Day by Oliver Stritzel . In addition, in the German version of Zoomania , Stritzel took over the voice of Chief Bogo, originally spoken by Elba. Other dubbing voices include Thomas Amper ( Cats (2019) ) , Marco Kröger ( Avengers: Infinity War ) and Leon Boden (Mandela: The long way to freedom) .
