My beautiful mother-in-law (original title: Belle maman ) is a French comedy film with Catherine Deneuve from 1999. A novel by Jean-Marie Duprez served as a literary model .

action

The Paris lawyer Antoine wants to turn his pregnant friend and colleague Séverine into an honorable woman. When he is standing in front of the altar with her, he meets his future mother-in-law Léa for the first time, who lives in the Bahamas with her friend Grégoire , who comes from the Caribbean . Antoine immediately falls in love with the attractive woman. While the wedding is being celebrated, Léa spontaneously holds her own celebration in a unisex toilet . When Séverine and her father Paul arrive and they find Antoine among the dancers, the party comes to an abrupt end. Séverine is furious that her mother stole the show on her wedding day.

Séverine eventually gives birth to a daughter named Pauline. When Léa leaves the hospital, she is jostled by a boy. She smokes a cigarette with him and is then arrested by the police who find hashish in her bag. Antoine ensures that she is released from custody. Then they go out to eat in pairs. When they take a taxi together, Antoine can no longer contain himself. He kisses her stormily, for which Léa slaps him on the face. Out of consideration for her daughter, Léa subsequently tries to avoid her son-in-law. She finally leaves again.

A few months later, the entire family is invited to the Bahamas, where Léa's mother Nicou and her partner Brigitte want to celebrate her 70th birthday. Léa is still cool to Antoine, who doesn't let that discourage him. When Séverine wants to leave for France with him and Pauline, Antoine pretends to have lost his passport. Séverine finally flies without him. Instead, Antoine goes back to her house with Léa. When they receive news of a stranded whale, Nicou, Léa and Antoine immediately set off for the beach. While Nicou and Antoine push the whale back into the sea with the locals, Léa enthusiastically takes photos of them. She finally brings Antoine back to the airfield. Before he takes off, Antoine gives her a kiss and confesses his love to her. Léa is close to tears.

Back in Paris, Antoine can only think of Léa, so that he increasingly neglects Séverine. When Grégoire unexpectedly dies, Léa, Nicou and Brigitte also return to Paris. Léa gets a job with television and is now looking for a suitable apartment. She asks Antoine to help her as an expert lawyer in negotiations with the real estate agent. Antoine comes by immediately and makes sure that Léa gets the apartment at a cheaper rental price. Then they go to the opera together. At a family dinner together, Léa tells that she met a man while watching TV. Antoine is immediately jealous and has a fit of rage. In doing so, his feelings for his mother-in-law become evident to everyone. He disappears and does not return home. Léa, who assures her daughter that there was nothing between her and Antoine, finally finds him in the basement of a library. They kiss and then sleep together. Meanwhile, Séverine calls her father and tells him that Antoine has left her for her mother. Her father then marries a prostitute in a castle. Séverine has since found someone else and Léa and Antoine are also a happy couple.

background

Ermenonville Castle , the location of the last scene

In Gabriel Aghion's My Beautiful Mother-in-Law , Catherine Deneuve starred in a comedy for the first time since Der Buschpilot ( L'Africain , 1983). However, the role of Léa was originally not intended for her, but for Catherine Jacob . Patrick Timsit , who already works with Aghion Men like it hot! ( Pédale douce , 1996) and was actually supposed to play Antoine, Deneuve ultimately suggested. Timsit again decided to make another film. The role of Antoine was then offered to Alain Chabat and finally to Vincent Lindon . The shooting took place in 1998 in Paris and Martinique .

My beautiful mother- in -law premiered on March 10, 1999 in France , where the comedy film subsequently became a hit. In Germany , the film was shown on television for the first time on June 9, 2002 by ZDF .

Reviews

For the lexicon of international films , my beautiful mother-in-law was a "[c] harmant comedy about an 'amour fou' and the power of feelings". The film is "played convincingly", but the focus is on "Catherine Deneuve, who gives credibility to the subject, which plays on several levels". Cinema described the film as a "colorful and amusing comedy with great actors like Stéphane Audran", which was "in a typically French way fun-loving and relaxed".

Awards

At the César Awards 2000 , Line Renaud , who played the role of Nicou in the film, was nominated for the César for Best Supporting Actress. In the end, however, she could not prevail against Charlotte Gainsbourg in La Bûche .
