The bush pilot (original title: L'Africain ) is a French adventure film with Catherine Deneuve and Philippe Noiret from 1983.

action

Charlotte works for a travel company in Paris . To find a suitable place for a new travel destination, she and her colleague Paul Planchet travel to a village in Central Africa. There she meets her husband Victor, with whom she has been divorced for a long time. Victor had once left France to work as a bush pilot and conservationist in Africa for the preservation of the local biodiversity. Now he is supposed to fly Charlotte and Paul to the tribe of the Pygmies . When Charlotte finds a dead monkey head on her pillow in her quarters, she believes that Victor was making a bad joke. However, he swears it wasn't. As a result, they clash repeatedly, especially since Victor decidedly refuses to build a holiday resort for tourists. After he flies Charlotte and Paul into the bush and leaves them to their own devices, he worries about his wife. So he goes to a medicine man and drinks a mixture that temporarily cures him of it.

However, when Victor learns that a gang of ivory smugglers is also heading into the forbidden zone of the pygmies, he decides to save Charlotte and Paul. Meanwhile, they get stuck with their car in a river bed. Victor locates them and lands on the other side of the river in his plane. He tries to cross the river, but turns back when crocodiles approach him. The gang leader, Aristote Poulakis, had initially presented himself as a helpful trader. Since tourists would disrupt his smuggling business, he wants to kidnap Charlotte and Paul. Charlotte escapes him in the bush, so that Poulakis has to be content with Paul as a hostage.

Shortly afterwards, Victor finds Charlotte again and together they are now looking for Paul. On the way they end up in the territory of the pygmies, who receive them benevolently after Charlotte takes care of a sick pygmy and tries to learn the language of the tribe. As they continue their search, Charlotte no longer wants to build a tourist village. They then manage to track down Poulakis and his men. They free Paul and try to fly away on a seaplane. In order to be able to take off, they throw the ivory stored in the plane overboard. Back in the village, Victor and Charlotte say goodbye to each other. During their adventure they have become closer again, Charlotte nevertheless returns to Paris with Paul, while Victor stays in Africa.
