Adventure in Rio (Original title: L'Homme de Rio) is an Italian - French feature film from 1964 by Philippe de Broca with Jean-Paul Belmondo and Françoise Dorléac in the leading roles. The action comedy shows how a young soldier is embroiled in hair-raising adventures in France and Brazil in search of his kidnapped girlfriend.
action
The French Air Force soldier, Adrien Dufourquet from Besançon , wants to visit his capricious bride Agnès Villermosa in Paris during his eight-day home vacation. Shortly before his arrival, strangers from the Musée de l'Homme ethnological museum in Paris stole an old American statuette and murdered a security guard. Professor Catalan, an expert on the submerged Maltek culture, informs the investigating commissioner about the background of the statuette: there are three specimens that the expedition members de Castro, Villermosa and Catalan found in the Brazilian jungle. Each of the participants took one of the statuettes. Villermosa died shortly after the expedition. His daughter Agnès knows where her father's statuette is in Rio. When Agnès is kidnapped in front of Adrien's eyes, he follows her to Rio de Janeiro .
In Rio Adrien is supported by the young shoeshine boy "Sir Winston". Agnès can be freed from a hotel by Adrien. They find the statuette of Agnès' father, but the gangsters take it from them. Both go to Brasília to visit the billionaire de Castro. On the way there, they free Professor Catalan from the hands of the gangsters. In Brasilia, which is currently under construction, they meet de Castro. There it turns out that Catalan was the mastermind behind the murders and kidnappings. He murders de Castro and kidnaps Agnès, with whom he is in love. Adrien pursues them to a smaller town in the Amazon basin. From there, Catalan, his gang and Agnès drive into the rainforest to find the treasure.
The statuettes not only contained small pieces of paper on which the treasure map was drawn; they must also be set up in a cave at a specific time of the day. The precious stones fastened in the statuettes break the light and point to the entrance to the treasury. Agnès is freed again by Adrien and Catalan is buried in the treasure cave by earth tremors caused by explosions. The blasting came from the construction company that drives the Transamazônica through the rainforest. Adrien makes it to France and his train in the Gare de Lyon just in time , which will bring him back to the troops.
background
Director De Broca fulfilled a childhood dream with adventures in Rio - he made the film, which he says he would have always liked to see as a child. The inspiration for the conception of the film was the comic series Tintin by comic artist Hergé , but also the classic adventure stories by Joseph Conrad , Jack London and Jules Verne . Adventure in Rio not only became a box office success in Europe and the USA in the mid-1960s ( Robert Kennedy is said to have seen the film twice in theaters), but later also became the model for many modern adventure films such as the Indiana Jones - Series by Steven Spielberg .
Screenwriter Ariane Mnouchkine founded the world-famous Théâtre du Soleil in the year that Adventure in Rio was shot . Historically noteworthy are the scenes that show Brasilia still in the stage of a major construction site.
Georges Delerue , who was one of the most famous film composers in the world ( Platoon , The Last Metro ), was responsible for the film music . His works have been awarded an Oscar and a César , among others . In 2006, excerpts from the soundtrack and versions of the film themes on Adventure in Rio, re-enacted by Alexandre Desplat, were released on CD by Universal Music France. In March 2009, the complete Delerue score was published for the first time by Kritzerland Records in an edition limited to a thousand pieces on CD. The soloist for the title 'Sightseeing' is the Brazilian singer Elizeth Cardoso (1920–1990).
The film was released in the Federal Republic of Germany on April 17, 1964 and in the GDR on August 6, 1965. It was first seen on German television on June 14, 1975 at 10:05 pm on ARD.
criticism
The lexicon of international films wrote: “An ironic adventure film that serves its effects with lively. A somewhat rough, but hearty pleasure. "
Awards
The film was nominated at the Academy Awards in 1965 in the category " Best Original Screenplay ", but had to surrender to the American war drama The Big Wolf Calls . In 1964 the film won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for “Best Foreign Language Film”.
The magazine Der Spiegel selected the scene in which Adrien wants a “pink car with green stars” for Agnès and she gets it immediately - thanks to a rapid cut - as one of a hundred extraordinary moments in film history .
