action

In the French provinces, a completely impoverished aristocratic family - three generations exist - can only save their ramshackle castle on the edge of the motorway if they temporarily turn it into a tourist hostel. The decay of the building is so advanced that 110 chamber pots alone have to be on the granary to prevent the rain from softening the ceiling fresco. The youngest of the clan is sent out to pull guests ashore by simulating car breakdowns together with their loved one, the gas station and garage owner Charles. The focus is then on the fight of the rogue grandmother leading the nobles against one of the guests, who introduces himself as Baron César Anselme de Maricorne and is accompanied by two "secretaries". In reality, however, César is a well-mannered crook who is on the run and, in addition to his winning charm, has the advantage of owning a (stolen) million that would be very desirable for the restoration of the castle. The crook loses the fight; he is married by an unmarried relative who is always available to the nobility.

criticism

The Protestant film observer summarized his assessment as follows: Thematically irrelevant, but presented by de Broca with impressionistic ease and not without a joke. Madeleine Renaud as the rogue old countess is worth seeing. From around 14. The lexicon of international films drew the following conclusion: A cheerful, piquant comedy that entertains amusingly with witty, charming ideas and macabre humor. The Frankfurter Rundschau ruled: It was great fun from director Philippe de Broca with a convincing Yves Montand in the role of Baron César de Maricorne. But also the other actors show consistently successful acting performances. Look out for Marthe Keller, who can be seen here in her first French film. The Wiesbaden Film Assessment Office gave the film the rating of “valuable”.
