Philippe de Broca (born March 15, 1933 in Paris , † November 26, 2004 in Neuilly-sur-Seine near Paris) was a French film director .

Life

De Broca came from the French small nobility. Initially, Georges Lacombe and Henri Decoin were his teachers. He then learned his craft as an assistant director with well-known directors such as Claude Chabrol and François Truffaut . Philippe de Broca played a minor role in Chabrol's first film, Le Beau Serge (1958).

He has made films with stars like Jean-Pierre Cassel , Françoise Dorléac , Jean-Paul Belmondo , Yves Montand , Philippe Noiret and Catherine Deneuve . De Broca was also called "New Wave Comedian" in film circles. Especially in the 1960s he shot numerous comedies, comedies and adventure films. He became known for Cartouche the Bandit (1962) and Adventure in Rio (1964) with Belmondo in the lead roles. In 1960 he received the German Film Critics' Prize and the Silver Bear at the Berlinale for his film Liebesspiele (with Jean-Pierre Cassel) .

With the actress Marthe Keller he had a son, Alexandre (* 1971). Two other children were born from the marriage to the French actress Valérie Rojan .

De Broca died on 26 November 2004 at the American Hospital of Neuilly-sur-Seine at the age of 71 years a cancer . At the beginning of October his last film, Viper in Faust, was released in French cinemas; due to his illness, he was no longer able to watch the cinema release. With his death, the film became a box-office hit in France. De Broca's grave is in the Cimetiere communal in Sauzon on the island of Belle-Ile-en-Mer in the Morbihan department , region Brittany .
