Cartouche, the Bandit (original title: Cartouche ) is a French - Italian adventure film from 1962 with Jean-Paul Belmondo in the role of the French robber Cartouche (1693-1721).

action

Paris in the 18th century: the bandit Louis-Dominique Bourguignon and his younger brother Louison steal from wealthy citizens at a market. When a thief is about to be executed, Louis-Dominique meets the police prefect Gaston de Ferrussac and his wife Isabelle, whom he is immediately fascinated by. Then he goes to the hiding place of the band of robbers to which he belongs, and gives their leader Malichot his prey. When Malichot attacks a thief who has stolen nothing, Louis-Dominique interferes and then flees with his brother. In order to avoid Malichot from now on, Louis-Dominique is recruited for military service.

With La Douceur and La Taupe, two bandits who have also decided to live as a soldier, he steals the gold of a marshal intended for the regimental treasury and finds shelter in an inn. There he meets the thief Vénus and hooks up with her. A sergeant and several soldiers finally arrive to retrieve the gold and arrest Louis-Dominique and his accomplices. Venus should therefore take the gold to Paris and wait for him there. La Douceur, La Taupe and Louis-Dominique are locked in the basement of the inn. However, they manage to escape. In Paris, Louis-Dominique finds Vénus in the clutches of Malichot. He overpowers him and then makes himself the leader of the gang.

Under the name of Cartouche, he goes around robbing his men from now on. Vénus, who fell in love with him, also supports him. Together they steal from the rich and share their booty with the poor. When Cartouche meets Isabelle de Ferrussac again, he decides to win her heart over. Vénus reacts with jealousy, whereupon Cartouche suggests an evening for two. However, Malichot betrays them to the prefect of police. Cartouche and Vénus manage to escape the soldiers, but more soldiers storm the gang's hiding place and take La Douceur prisoner. Cartouche proposes a deal to the police prefect, but he does not accept it. The bandit and his men still manage to save La Douceur from execution.

In the evening, Cartouche pays Isabelle a visit to her bedroom. He wants to convince her of his love and gives her his pistol, but it is not loaded. Cartouche kisses Isabelle, who has passed out, and leaves the room. After he has laid the treasure of a Turkish envoy at her feet, her maid Pierette lets Police Prefect de Ferrussac, Isabelle's husband, take her into the confidence. Pierette later tells him where Cartouche is waiting for Isabelle on the occasion of a hoped-for rendezvous. Cartouche is arrested there. On a forest path, Venus and Cartouche's gang lie in wait for the soldiers who are supposed to take him to prison. They free Cartouche, but Venus is hit by a shot and she dies. Cartouche and his gang arrive at a high society ball attended by Isabelle. They take the jewelery from the guests present and place it on Vénus' corpse, which Cartouche then sinks in a golden carriage in a river. He swears revenge and looks forward to his own execution.

Reviews

For the lexicon of international films , Cartouche, the Bandit was an "[unusually fast and turbulent adventure film about the brilliant deeds of a French Robin Hood". The film is "exuberant, with an occasional tendency to lustful kitsch" and shows Jean-Paul Belmondo in "a prime role". Cinema described the film as a "lively, fast-paced bandit comedy". This is "[b] untidy, fast, funny and sexy".

Prisma found that director Philippe de Broca “let this entertaining adventure film start snappy and with a lot of humor”, but in the end he prefers “sentimental tones” and “never becomes very clear” “what Cartouche finds in pale Odile Versois when he does but Claudia Cardinale can have ". The film is still "lively entertainment".

German versions

The German dubbed version was created by the Internationale Film-Union GmbH , Remagen. The dialogue was directed by Horst H. Roth after the dialogue book by Paula Lepa .
