François de Lamothe (born May 9, 1928 in Meaux , France , † November 3, 2011 in Paris ) was a French film architect .

Life

De Lamothe was, alongside Jacques Saulnier and Bernard Evein , one of the most important and sought-after production designers in French entertainment cinema of his generation. In Paris he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and received his cinematic skills at the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques . De Lamothe gained practical experience as an assistant to the film architects Max Douy and Serge Pimenoff . In addition to the cinema, his field of work also included theater and television.

De Lamothes first activity for the film was in 1954 the sketch for White Slaves for Tangier (Les impures), 1957/58 he worked regularly as assistant set designer for the film: White Freight from Paris (Cargaison blanche), The Twins and the Murderer (Les trois font la paire), The sixth man (Tous peuvent me tuer) and Life for two (La vie à deux). As chief architect since 1958, François de Lamothe was soon preferred for the films of the comedy specialists Philippe de Broca and Édouard Molinaro . But he also designed often the decorations to dramatic fabrics, including mysteries about cynical heroes and lonely anti-hero who, directed by Jean-Pierre Melville ( Le Samouraï ), Julien Duvivier ( rest house of the devil ) and again Jacques Deray emerged . The director Robert Hossein , who became well known as an actor, also used de Lamothes skills.

François de Lamothe's best work includes films with historical references and literary adaptations , including Roger Vadim's Der Reigen , Bud Yorkin's The French Revolution Did n't Happen , Dominique Delouche's 24 Hours of the Life of a Woman, and Peter Glenville's Hotel Paradiso . In these productions, he revived the worlds of the Belle Epoque and Romanticism with great attention to detail . De facto, all the top stars of French cinema from the 1960s to the 1980s moved in his decorations, including Louis de Funès , Jean-Paul Belmondo , Alain Delon and Lino Ventura .
