action

French scientists find a human body trapped in the Arctic pack ice. They succeed in bringing the roughly twenty-five year old man back to life.

At a party given by Hubert de Tartas (in the German version: Paul de Tartas ), manufacturer of packaging materials, in honor of the engagement of his son Didier to Evelyne Crépin-Jaujard, daughter of a business friend, the guests followed the reports on television with excitement .

The next day, Hubert is asked to make an appointment at the Ministry of the Interior. While he is actually awaiting the award of the long-awaited Cross of the Legion of Honor, the Secretary General tells him that the resurrected one is his wife's grandfather. Tartas is anything but enthusiastic as he fears entanglements for his family and especially for his company, which should actually open up new business prospects through the marriage of his son. Because the company basically belongs to his wife Edmée, Hubert suspects that the appearance of another family member could endanger his position as managing director, as the one he has been able to do as much as possible, since his wife does not care about business matters takes care.

This is how he finds himself in a conversation with Professor Loriebat, who leads the experiment, on his side, as he claims the reanimated for himself and for science. Edmée, however, would like to have her grandfather Paul Fournier in the lap of the family. But when she remains stubborn and deprives her husband of both the marital bed and the decision-making power in the company, he changes his mind and now absolutely wants to bring the ancestor into the family.

Since Loriebat refuses and the French government knows that they are on his side, Hubert and Edmée decide to kidnap the grandfather from Loriebat's staff with the help of a psychologist. After a wild chase, in the course of which the professor is stunned and exchanged with the resurrected man, they hide in a monastery, where Loriebat finally has to admit defeat, since Paul Fournier has woken up and thinks his granddaughter is his mother.

But because Fournier does not know anything about the events surrounding his awakening and continues to think that he is in the year 1905, an appropriate environment must be created for him, also to spare him a psychological breakdown. The Tartassche Villa, which has just been redesigned for a lot of money in a modern style, is being moved back to the founding era and the surrounding district is also being changed accordingly. Modern means of transport are being replaced by carriages or early models of automobiles, the residents of the district are dressed in historical clothing and current newspapers are exchanged for suitable copies.

The masquerade works perfectly at first, but Hubert is chased out of the house by Fournier when he meets Fournier for the first time, because he thinks he is his father, who had cheated on his wife at the time. In this way, Hubert finds a new identity as an admirer of Fournier's "Mama", in which he can re-enter the house and approach his wife.

Under the strict eyes of Fournier, this works reasonably well, but puts Hubert under great pressure, because he cannot move around in his own house as he wants, and he has to discover that Fournier wants to control the fate of the family entirely by himself . When it turns out that his son Didier, who is sublet as a young student, does not love his fiancée at all, but chases after the chambermaid Sophie and, to make matters worse, his wife's grandfather has fallen in love with Evelyne, Hubert freaks out. He assaulted Fournier with the truth about his supposed riding accident and showered him with the details of social and technical developments since 1905.

When the arriving Loriebat and Edmée want to stop him, Hubert flees. At first glance, Fournier, confused, does not know whether to believe all of this and thinks that his mother's supposed admirer is crazy. When he opened a cupboard, however, he saw a television in which he saw excerpts from a documentary about the development of aviation from the first pioneering days to the Concorde and military jets. With the help of Evelyne, he takes the news calmly and calmly.

He and Evelyne finally get married when the wedding party receives a message from Hubert, who has been missing for days. When Edmée, Paul and the others arrive at Prof. Loriebat's laboratory, they discover that Hubert, apparently mad, has put himself into artificial hibernation in the icy cold chamber.

Reviews

  • Lexicon of international film : “Undemanding amusing family entertainment.”. Hahn / Jansen also quote from the film-dienst review: "It goes without saying that the main actor plays even the smallest gag down to the last detail and down to the last screw turn ... Nevertheless ... this new" Balduin "plum is not so mature like some of its predecessors were picked from the tree of undemanding serenity. "
  • Frank Ehrlacher at moviemaster.de: “Nice idea and mostly funny execution under the direction of Eduard Molinaro, who would later celebrate his greatest success with ' A Cage Full of Fools '. Louis de Funes shines once more as an overwhelmed hectic in all situations. "
