Torbjörn Jarle Kornbakk (born May 28, 1965 in Gothenburg ) is a former Swedish wrestler .

Career

Torbjörn Kornbakk grew up in Gothenburg. As a teenager he played soccer and liked to swim, but in 1973 he got into wrestling with his brother Martin through a friend . He joined the sports club Örgryte IS Gothenburg and was one of the best Swedish wrestlers in his respective age group as a teenager and junior. He wrestled exclusively in the Greco-Roman style. At 1.79 m tall, he weighed around 76 to 78 kg and was more of a slim, elegant wrestler. With the help of his coach Martin Steen, he made the leap into the Swedish national team at the age of 20. He made his debut at international championships at the European championships in 1988 in Kolbotn / Norway . He took a good 5th place and was the best wrestler from a non-socialist state. At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 Torbjörn was not used yet. The more experienced Roger Tallroth was preferred to him.

In 1989 he was back at the European Championships in Oulu and from then on represented Sweden at many international championships up to 1998. In Oulu he took an excellent 2nd place. In the final he lost to Petar Tenew from Bulgaria . At the world championship of the same year in Martigny / Switzerland he had to be content with a 9th place.

Torbjörn won his first international title in 1990. He became European champion in Poznan . In a purely Scandinavian final, he defeated the Finn Tuomo Karila . At the World Cup in Rome in 1990 he delivered some good fights again, but ended up in 6th place.

He also won a medal again at the European Championships in Aschaffenburg in 1991 , while finishing 10th at the World Championships in the same year.

In the 1992 Olympic year, he won a medal in Barcelona when he took part in the Olympic Games for the first time. In the battle for the bronze medal, he won over Néstor Almanza from Cuba after failing in the semifinals against the Poland Josef Tracz .

In 1993, due to an injury, he was only able to take part in the World Championships held in Stockholm in autumn . Of course he would have liked to win a medal in his home country, but because of a defeat against the French Yvon Riemer in the battle for the bronze medal, he only came in 4th place.

But he was again very successful in 1994, because he won the bronze medal at both the European Championships in Athens and the World Championships in Tampere . At the world championship he was defeated by his old rival Mnazakan Iskandarjan from Russia just on points and defeated Stoyan Stoyanow from Bulgaria in the battle for the bronze medal.

After Torbjörn was out due to injury in 1995, he was back on the mat from 1996 to 1998. But he only got a top spot at the 1997 European Championships in Kouvola . He was European champion for the second time. In the final battle he defeated Marko Asell from Finland . At the Olympic Games in 1996 he had previously landed on the 10th place, which was disappointing for him.

After he only came in 22nd place at the 1998 World Cup in his own country, namely in Gävle , after two defeats against the Armenian Levan Geghamyan and the Japanese Takamitsu Katayama , he ended his international career.

Torbjörn Kornbakk was also very well known in Germany , because he competed successfully for KSV Witten in the Bundesliga for many years . He now works as a chiropractor in his hometown.
