Uladsimir Kapytau ( Belarusian Уладзімір Капытаў , Russian Владимир Николаевич Копытов , Vladimir Nikolajewitsch Kopytow ; born September 25, 1965 in Homel ) is a former Belarusian wrestler . He was a multiple medalist at world and European championships and an Olympian for Belarus in Greco-Roman style.

Career

Uladsimir Kapytau's international wrestling career only began at the age of 29, although he had been wrestling since he was 12. This opportunity opened up to him with the collapse of the Soviet Union . Until 1992, only one team from the Soviet Union or the CIS competed in the two styles at the international championships . Because of the strong competition in the USSR , Kapytau had no chance of getting into one of these teams. From 1993 each successor state of the USSR could take part in these championships with its own team. So there was the chance for Wladimir Kapytau, who started for Spartak Homel and the Trade Union Sport Club Homel and was trained by Wladimir Freden and Grigori Kosowski, to take part in international championships. Kapytau only wrestled in the Greco-Roman style.

Immediately on his first participation in a European Championship in 1994, he took advantage of this opportunity and was in Athens welterweight behind Erol Koyuncu from Turkey Vice European champion . At the World Championships this year in Tampere he came in the welterweight division on 7th place. The winner there was the Armenian Mnazakan Iskandarjan, who started for Russia . At the 1995 European Championships in Besançon , however, he won another medal with the bronze medal. At the 1995 World Cup in Prague he lost a. a. against Erik Hahn from Germany and only reached 8th place.

At the European Championships in Budapest in 1996 , he won the silver medal in the welterweight division. In the final he lost against the young Turkish Nazmi Avluca , who was at the beginning of a great career. As one of the co-favorites, Uladsimir Kapytau started at the Olympic Games in Atlanta . But he lost there against Erik Hahn and against Nazmi Avluca, which meant that the Olympic wrestling tournament was over for him after the 2nd fight. He only reached 14th place.

In 1997 a new weight classification came into force by the international wrestling association FILA. At the European Championships this year in Kouvola , Uladsimir Kapytau started again in the welterweight division, in which one could now weigh up to 76 kg instead of the previous 74 kg. In Kouvola he won in his first fight against Erik Hahn , but lost his second fight against Marko Asell from Finland and despite a victory in his third fight over Valeri Kopajew from Russia only came in 15th place. At the World Championships this year in Wrócław, he then trained in the lightweight, which now reached up to 69 kg. But he lost in Wrócław after a victory in the first fight against Niya Saiyi from China in the second fight against Bisser Georgiew from Bulgaria , retired and only finished 21st place.

The career of the now 33-year-old seemed to be drawing to a close after the bad 1997, but he promptly won a silver medal again at the 1998 European championship in Minsk in the lightweight . In doing so he defeated u. a. the very strong wrestlers Tariel Melelaschwili from Georgia and Adam Juretzko from Germany. In the final, however, he had no chance against Alexander Tretyakov from Russia. At the 1998 World Cup, Uladsimir Kapytau took a break.

In 1999 he only competed in the world championship and won his fifth medal at an international championship in Athens , a bronze one. His victory over Liubel Colas Oris from Cuba was remarkable . In the semifinals he lost again to Tretyakov and in the fight for the bronze medal he was lucky that in the fight against Csaba Hirbik from Hungary , which ended 4: 4, the jury awarded him the victory.

In 2000, Uladsimir Kapytau tried to win a medal at the Olympic Games. But he didn't succeed in Sydney , because he lost in the lightweight against the two ex-world champions Rustam Adschi from Ukraine and Alexei Gluschkow from Russia and only finished 17th.

After the Olympic Games in 2000, he ended his wrestling career.
