Tuomo Arto Mikael Karila (born April 7, 1968 in Helsinki ) is a former Finnish wrestler .

Career

Tuomo Karila started as a teenager when Ringer Club Vantaan Sampo with the rings . His coach was the former world champion Ilpo Seppälä , who trained him to become an excellent wrestler. Unlike most other world class wrestlers, Tuomo Karila was not a professional wrestler, but studied medicine on the side . He was active in both styles and became a Finnish master several times both in the free style and in the Greco-Roman style. On the international wrestling mat, however, he was only at the start in the Greco-Roman style.

Tuomo Karila made his debut at international championships at the Junior World Championships of Espoirs (age group up to 20 years) in 1987 in Burnaby , Canada . There he took an excellent 3rd place in the welterweight division, which he was followed by a 2nd place at the European Junior Championships of the Espoirs in 1988 in Waldenburg, Poland.

In the senior class, Tuomo Karila first started in an international championship in 1989, namely the World Championship in Martigny / Switzerland . He finished there in 10th place in the welterweight division. As early as the next year he achieved his first great success at the European Championships in Poznań. It was not until the final that he lost to his Nordic compatriot Torbjörn Kornbakk from Sweden and won the European Championship silver medal.

In the following years, very good placements alternated with rather mediocre placements. However, Tuomo Karila managed to stand on the podium twice at international championships. In 1991 he became vice European champion again at the European welterweight championship in Aschaffenburg , beaten only by the very strong Soviet wrestler Mnatsakan Iskandarian and in 1994 he was even vice world champion in Tampere in the middleweight division. In the final he was defeated by Thomas Zander from Aalen , against whom he also lost several times on other occasions.

Tuomo Karila competed twice at the Olympic Games: 1992 in Barcelona and 1996 in Atlanta . Both times he was not very lucky and ended up in 11th place.

In 1997 Tuomo Karila ended his wrestling career and finished his medical studies. Dr. med. Tuomo Karila is now a recognized orthopedic surgeon who has published several scientific papers at the University of Helsinki. He is also a member of the Anti-Doping Commission of the Finnish Wrestling Federation and is a member of the Finnish National Olympic Committee. He lives in Östersundom, a village in Sipoo .
