Fritz Engelke

Friedrich Gerhard Engelke (born February 24, 1878 in Schleswig ; † May 5, 1956 in Schwerin ) was a German Lutheran theologian and in 1934/35 "Imperial Vicar of the German Evangelical Church ".

Life

Engelke studied Protestant theology and obtained a doctorate in theology. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Hamburg state ordained him pastor and in 1925 he was appointed head of the Rauhen Haus in Hamburg-Horn .

He was appointed by Reich Bishop Ludwig Müller in February 1934, first as a Lutheran representative in the Spiritual Ministry and then on September 12, 1934 in the newly created office of "Vicar of the German Evangelical Church". In this capacity, on September 21, 1934, together with Julius Kühlewein, he introduced Müller into his office as Reich Bishop in Berlin Cathedral .

After the end of the Reich Church Government through the appointment of Hanns Kerrl as Reich Church Minister, Engelke succeeded the Rostock professor of practical theology Helmuth Schreiner , who had to give up all offices, who had been forced into retirement by Gauleiter Friedrich Hildebrandt . In 1939 Engelke joined the Institute for Research and Elimination of Jewish Influence on German Church Life .

After 1945 he worked as a pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mecklenburg in Schwerin . From 1950 he represented Aurel von Jüchen , who was imprisoned in the Vorkuta Gulag, at the Church of St. Nikolai (Schelfkirche) Schwerin .
