Sipoo [ ˈsipɔː ] ( Swedish Sibbo ) is a municipality on the south coast of Finland with 20,666 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). The neighboring municipality of the capital Helsinki is located in the countryside Uusimaa (until 31 December 2010 in Eastern Uusimaa ) and belongs to the Helsinki region .
Sipoo / Sibbo was once almost entirely Swedish-speaking . Due to the strong influx from other parts of the country, Sipoo has been mostly Finnish-speaking since 2003. Today 58% of the population speak Finnish and 40% speak Swedish. The population is concentrated in the settlement centers of Box, Martinkylä / Mårtensby, Söderkulla, Talma / Tallmo, Västerskog and Nikkilä / Nickby. Most of Sipoo's residents work in Helsinki.
history
There are archaeological finds in Sipoo from the Stone and Bronze Ages . In the 11th to 13th centuries there was a fortress and a market place at the mouth of the Sipoo River. Sipoo is first mentioned in a document in 1352. The stone church of Sipoo dates from the middle of the 16th century. In the 17th century numerous country estates became noble families.
Community reform 2009
According to a decision by the Finnish government, at the beginning of 2009, against the will of Sipoo, an area of around 30 km² was removed from southwestern Sipoo and added to the city of Helsinki. The city of Helsinki originally requested the surrender of around 50 km². A complaint by the municipality of Sipoo against the government's decision was rejected by the Supreme Administrative Court in January 2008 . This was preceded by decades of disputes between Helsinki and Sipoo over the question of whether and to what extent Sipoo should participate in the growth of the capital region. The shift in the municipal boundary should enable Helsinki to expand urban development into what has remained rural until now.
