Nurmijärvi [ ˈnurmijærvi ] is a municipality in southern Finland . It is located about halfway between Helsinki (37 km) and Riihimäki on European route 12 . Because of its location in the Helsinki region , near the Finnish capital, Nurmijärvi has grown rapidly in recent years and is now the largest rural municipality in Finland in terms of population. The area is 367.32 km², of which 4.83 km² consists of water. The place became an independent parish in 1775 . Hyvinkää belonged to Nurmijärvi until 1917.

The municipality has four settlement centers: the largest village is Klaukkala with 17,300 inhabitants, then the church village Nurmijärvi with 7,400 inhabitants, Rajamäki with 6,500 inhabitants and Röykkä with 1,600 inhabitants.

The place was named after the former lake Nurmijärvi. This was in the middle of the community; it was drained for arable land between the 1920s and 1950s.

Nurmijärvi is the birthplace of the writer Aleksis Kivi . The community's coat of arms reminds of his novel The Seven Brothers .
