Jesse Krohn , actually Jesse Kurki-Suonio , (born September 3, 1990 in Nurmijärvi ) is a Finnish racing driver .

Private life

Krohn was born in the Nurmijärvi municipality in the south of the Uusimaa region. His father Pertti drove as a competitor to the later Formula 1 drivers Mika Häkkinen and Mika Salo . Although he ended up right behind the two in the championship standings, he never made the leap out of Scandinavia .

Krohn comes from a motorsport-loving family. His father, Pertti, competed in the Finnish Formula Ford championship in the 1987 season as a teammate of Mika Häkkinen ( Formula 1 world champion in 1998 and 1999 ). His sister Jenni and his brother Oskari also compete in motorsport, both of which are nationally active in Finland.

Career

Jesse Krohn began his career at the age of six in karting , in which he competed for nine years. From 2005 onwards, in addition to the monoposto, he also competed in sports cars and became a test driver for various manufacturers. In 2006 he took part in some Formula Ford races in his home country of Finland, which he finished eighth. He also competed at the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch , which he finished tenth, and in the British Formula Ford Winter Series, where he was runner-up behind the British David Mayes. Krohn took part in the entire season of the British championship in the following year, while also taking part in the Finnish Formula 3 championship. In the British championship he finished the season in 17th and had collected 82 points. His engagement in Finland went much better, where he finished second in the overall standings; during the year he had six wins. At this year's Formula Ford Festival he was more successful than the year before, as he reached eighth place.

The year 2008 was the most successful of his career so far. He collected three championship titles in the Finnish, Estonian and Scandinavian (NEZ) Formula Renault. In total, he collected ten wins in the three championships. He also took part in the national championships in Great Britain, Northern Europe and Italy , in which, however, he was able to collect comparatively little success. With some successes from last year in his luggage, he also took part in a full season in the British Formula Renault Championship, in which he was able to collect 117 points and a win in Thruxton.

Krohn gained notoriety when he moved up from 25th to seventh place in the rain at Donington Park . However, shortly afterwards he suffered a suspension damage and had to finish the race with only three tires. According to a statement by the Mark Burdett Motorsport engineer Andy Miller, it was "exactly what Jan Magnussen would have done" (Miller was involved in Magnussen's campaign in the British Formula 3 championship in 1994).

In 2014, Krohn was accepted into the BMW Junior Program, in which he was trained for three years under the guidance of established drivers such as Dirk Adorf and Jörg Müller . He won the championship title of the 2017/18 season of the Asian Le Mans Series in the GT class. His team mate was Jun San Chen, the two of them competed in a BMW M6 GT3 for the FIST team AAI. In 2018, Jesse Krohn was promoted to a BMW works driver.
