Augusto Farfus dos Santos Júnior (born September 3, 1983 in Curitiba ) is a Brazilian racing car driver . In 2001 he won the overall ranking of the Formula Renault 2000 Eurocup and in 2003 the Euro Formula 3000 . He was active in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) from 2005 to 2010 . His best overall placements were two third places (2006 and 2009). From 2012 to 2018 he competed for BMW teams in the DTM . He achieved his best overall placement in 2013 when he came second.

Career

Karting (1991–1999)

Farfus rose at the age of seven years with participation in the minibike -Championnat of Motorsport Clubs of Paranaense , a district of Curitiba, in the motorsport one. He ended his debut season with the championship title. Just one year later he discovered his interest in karting and competed in the cadet class of the kart championship of the Paranaense club in his first motorsport season on four wheels, which he again finished with the championship title. This was the cornerstone for his further career in karting and in Formula Parilla . In the latter division, Farfus became champions in 1996 and 1997. The following year took him to North America for the first time, where he finished third in the North American Kart Championship. Farfus started in Europe for the first time in 1999, at the Italian Winter Cup for the Formula A kart championship. Again he secured the championship title.

Formula Renault and Euro Formula 3000 (2000-2003)

In 2000, Farfus in Formula racing and went for Cram Competition in the Italian Formula Renault and Formula Renault 2000 Eurocup on. While his teammate Felipe Massa won the overall standings in both series, Farfus finished tenth in the Italian Formula Renault and 21st in the Formula Renault 2000 Eurocup. In 2001 Farfus switched to RC Motorsport . In the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup he won four out of ten races and won the championship with 160 to 130 points against Marc Benz . Farfus had more than twice as many points as his teammates Robert Kubica and Mauro Massironi combined. He also took part in four races of the Italian Formula Renault.

In 2002 Farfus switched to the Draco Junior Team in the Euro Formula 3000 . With a third place as the best result, he finished the season in ninth place. In 2003 Farfus stayed with the Draco Junior Team. He won four of nine races and secured the championship title with 60 to 31 points ahead of Fabrizio del Monte . Within the team, he clearly prevailed against Sven Heidfeld , who scored four points.

Touring Car Championships (2004–2010)

Alfa Romeo (2004-2005)

In 2004 Farfus switched to AutoDelta Squadra Corse in the European Touring Car Championship (ETCC) and received an Alfa Romeo 156 . In his third race he achieved his first podium finish in touring car racing with a third place . With six third and one second place, he finished his first season in sixth place in the championship.

In 2005 the ETCC became the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC). Farfus stayed in his team, which this season called itself Alfa Romeo Racing Team . In the penultimate race of the season on the Guia Circuit in Macau , he won his first WTCC race. With a total of three podium finishes, he finished fourth in the overall standings. In 2006 Farfus won three races and finished the season as the best Alfa Romeo driver in third place.

Schnitzer Motorsport (2007-2009)

In 2007 Farfus switched to BMW as a works driver and was assigned to Schnitzer Motorsport . His teammate became Jörg Müller . Farfus won three races and was fourth overall at the end of the season. His brand colleague Andy Priaulx won the world championship that year. He also participated this year for BMW Sauber at 1 Formula part -Testfahrten.

In 2008 Farfus managed to achieve two victories. In the drivers' championship he finished sixth.

In 2009 Farfus was the driver who had won the most races with six wins. It was not enough to win the title, however, as he lost 113 points to Seat pilots Gabriele Tarquini (127 points) and Yvan Muller (123 points). Farfus was the best BMW driver for the first time this season. He prevailed against Müller every season.

Racing Bart Mampaey (2010)

In 2010 BMW reduced its factory involvement in the WTCC. Farfus switched to the Belgian team Racing Bart Mampaey , where Priaulx became his teammate. While Priaulx won races, three second places were Farfus' best results. He finished the season in seventh place.

In addition, Farfus was used in the sports car area of BMW. He made his debut in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and in the Le Mans Series . He also clinched overall victory in the Nürburgring 24-hour race together with Uwe Alzen , Pedro Lamy and Jörg Müller .

Transition year (2011)

After BMW withdrew from the WTCC at the end of 2010, Farfus did not take part in a complete racing season in 2011. For BMW he competed in the 24-hour races in Le Mans and the Nürburgring, as well as in a total of three races in the Le Mans Series and the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). He also took part in a V8 Supercars event for Holden .

DTM (2012-2018)

Racing Bart Mampaey (2012-2015)

For the 2012 season , Farfus entered the DTM with BMW . As in his last season in the WTCC, Farfus also drove in the DTM with Priaulx for Racing Bart Mampaey. In the second race at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz , Farfus achieved his first podium finish in the DTM with a third place. After Farfus had scored points in other races, he won his first DTM race in Valencia . Overall, Farfus achieved three podiums and two pole positions in the season. He finished his debut season as the best newcomer in seventh place overall.

In 2013 Farfus stayed with Racing Bart Mampaey in the DTM and he got a new team-mate in Joey Hand . At the season opener in Hockenheim he won and thus took the lead in the drivers' championship. He lost this again after the second race in which he did not finish. His second win of the season followed in Oschersleben . At the following race in Zandvoort , Farfus won again. With this, he secured second place in the drivers' standings ahead of time behind Mike Rockenfeller , who won the overall standings in this race. This made Farfus the best BMW driver.

In the 2014 season , Farfus completed his third DTM season for RBM - again by hand. With a second place he reached a podium and finished the season in 13th place overall. In addition, he competed in one race each in the Super GT , the United SportsCar Championship (USCC) and the Blancpain Endurance Series and made a guest start in the Stock Car Brasil .

In 2015 Farfus chose 18 as the starting number for his fourth DTM season and stayed with RBM. His new teammate was Tom Blomqvist . With two second places as the best results, he was twelfth in the drivers' championship. He also contested three races of the USCC for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing and he started again for a race in the Blancpain Endurance Series.

Team MTEK (2016)

In 2016 Farfus switched to Team MTEK within the BMW DTM teams and became Bruno Spengler's team-mate . At the season opener in Hockenheim , he achieved his only podium finish of the season in second. With 44 points he finished 16th in the overall ranking

Reinhold Motorsport (2017-2018)

After MTEK had left the DTM in the course of reducing the number of vehicles per manufacturer from eight to six, Farfus switched to Reinhold Motorsport for the 2017 season , where he became team-mate of Timo Glock and Marco Wittmann . For the first time in a complete DTM season he failed to achieve a podium, his greatest success was a pole position at Zandvoort , and so Farfus ended the season as the third-worst driver again in 16th place in the drivers' classification.

In 2018 Glock, Wittmann and Farfus stayed with Reinhold. At the Saturday race at Brands Hatch , he finished second for the first time since the beginning of 2016. In the drivers' standings, with 56 points, he finished 16th for the third time in a row.In addition, Farfus competed for Team MTEK together with António Félix da Costa and Alexander Sims in the Le Mans 24-hour race when the vehicle fell however, after 223 laps, due to a technical defect.

FIA World Endurance Championship and GT Sport (from 2019)

After seven years in the DTM, Farfus will switch to the FIA World Endurance Championship for BMW in 2019 and will be increasingly involved in GT racing.
