Dirk Werner (born May 25, 1981 in Hanover ) is a German automobile racing driver . In 2007 and 2009 he won the GT classification of the Rolex Sports Car Series . He competed in the DTM from 2012 to 2013 .
Career
In 1991 Werner began his motorsport career in karting , in which he was active until 1997. In 1998 he switched to formula racing . He took part in the Formula BMW Junior and achieved third place in the championship behind André Lotterer and Martin Tomczyk . In 1999 he went into Formula König . After he had achieved tenth place overall in the first season, he was runner-up in 2000 with 144 to 160 points behind Bernhard Auinger .
In 2001 Werner switched to touring car racing and initially competed in the German Ford Puma Cup for two years . After finishing fourth in 2001, he won the championship in 2002. In 2003 Werner competed in the German Renault Clio V6 Trophy . He won six out of eight races and won the overall standings.
In 2004 Werner received a cockpit at Farnbacher Racing in the Porsche Supercup , a GT brand cup. He was on the podium five times and finished third in the drivers' championship. His team-mate Wolf Henzler won the drivers' championship this season. He also took part in a race in the German Seat Leon Supercopa this season . In 2005 Werner only competed sporadically. He made four guest starts in the Porsche Supercup and crossed the finish line first in Spa-Francorchamps . He was also active in the German Porsche Carrera Cup . In 2006 Werner won two races in the German Porsche Carrera Cup for Farnbacher Racing and won the championship with 144 to 133 points against Uwe Alzen . He also took part in two races of the Porsche Supercup.
In 2007 Werner stayed with Farnbacher and drove on two tracks. On the one hand, he took part in the Le Mans Series and finished eighth in the LMGT2 classification. On the other hand, he made his debut for Farnbacher Loles in North America, where he took part in the Rolex Sports Car Series . He won a race in the GT classification and achieved ten podium placements in 13 starts, which he decided for himself this season. He was the first non-American to do this. He also took part in a race in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). In 2008 he competed for Farnbacher Loles almost exclusively in North America. With a classification win he finished sixth in the GT2 classification of the ALMS and eleventh in the GT classification of the Rolex Sports Car Series, in which he remained without a win. He also took part in a race in the Le Mans Series. In 2009 Werner won the GT classification of the Rolex Sports Car Series in four races. Together with his team-mate Leh Keen , he again won the championship title in the GT class. He also took part in the ALMS in the GT2 category. He was 13th with a podium finish. In addition, he competed for Manthey Racing together with Emmanuel Collard , Wolf Henzler and Richard Lietz in a Porsche 997 GT3 Cup S in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring and achieved third place. He also took part in some races of the BFGoodrich endurance championship for Mamerow Racing and won the last three races in a row with Christian Mamerow .
In 2010 Werner became a works driver at BMW . He did not appear in a full season. He started in the Le Mans Series, the ALMS and made his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans . He completed this race with Dirk Müller and Andy Priaulx . He achieved a podium finish in the GT2 class of the ALMS. In 2011 Werner took part in the entire ALMS season. Together with his team-mate Bill Auberlen , he was on the podium in the GT classification in five out of nine races and at the end of the season, he and Auberlen finished third in this category. In addition, he started again in a race in the Le Mans Series and took part in the Le Mans 24-hour race together with Augusto Farfus and Dirk Müller . He also competed in a Blancpain Endurance Series race in 2011 and competed in the Nürburgring 24-hour race in 2010 and 2011.
In 2012 Werner received a BMW cockpit from Schnitzer in the DTM . In the race at the Norisring , he scored his first point in tenth. With fourth place as the best result, he finished ninth in the drivers' standings, while his team-mate Bruno Spengler became DTM champion. In addition, he took part in a race in the Rolex Sports Car Series in 2012. In 2013 Werner stayed with the BMW DTM Team Schnitzer. At the start of the season in Hockenheim , he achieved his first podium finish with a second place. At the end of the season he finished 13th overall.
In 2019 Werner won the Bathurst 12 Hours together with Dennis Olsen and Matt Campbell in a Porsche .
