history

Mount Panorama Circuit

The track was created in the mid-1930s as part of a job creation program under comparable circumstances to the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany about 10 years earlier. The circuit was opened on March 17, 1938 by Mayor Martin Griffin and Minister of Labor Eric Spooner as Mount Panorama Scenic Drive . The first race took place on April 16, 1938 in front of 20,000 spectators.

In the history of the course there have been races in many classes from monoposto to motorcycle races. The unusual course of the route with long straights on the flat and a narrow, steep curve section on the slope of Mount Panorama, as well as outdated safety devices limit the range of races held there today to touring car races such as the V8 Supercars with the Bathurst 1000 .

The Formula 1 World Champion in 1967 , Denny Hulme , died in 1992 at the wheel of a car on the Conrod Straight in a heart attack after he had parked the car at the track boundary. In 2006, New Zealander Mark Porter died in a race in the V8 supercar series when his vehicle, standing across the track after a driving error, was hit on the driver's side by another car at almost undiminished speed.

In 2017, Scott McLaughlin beat Jamie Whincup's lap record (2: 04.744 minutes) by around 0.8 seconds. With 2: 03.831 minutes, McLaughlin secured pole position in the top ten qualifying of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship at the Bathurst 1000 .
