Eric Spooner

Eric Sydney Spooner (born March 2, 1891 in Redfern , New South Wales , Australia , † June 3, 1952 in Sydney , New South Wales) was an Australian politician.

Life

Spooner was born in Redfern, then a suburb of Sydney, and graduated from Christ Church St Laurence School. At 14 he became a telegraph delivery man and studied at night at the University of Sydney . He graduated from university with a degree in economics and commerce. In December 1919 he married Maria Berry. In 1922 he founded the accounting firm Hungerford, Spooner & Co with his brother William, a Minister for the Liberal Party of Australia from 1949 to 1964.

Political career

In June 1941 he became Minister for the War Organization of Industry , a position he held until the fall of the Fadden government in October 1941. He lost his seat in the 1943 election. In 1945 he joined the newly formed Liberal Party of Australia but was almost expelled for his opinion on the White Australia Policy . In 1946 he ran unsuccessfully against Prime Minister Ben Chifley .
