history
Redfern is named after the surgeon William Redfern , who in 1817 was given 100 acres (0.40 km²) by Governor Lachlan Macquarie .
The Redfern Post Office opened in 1892. Redfern is shaped by the numerous immigrants who emigrated to Australia and often found their first home there.
In 2004, the district made headlines after the accidental death of 17-year-old Thomas Hickey in street fighting between the police and residents of Redfern, mainly Aboriginal people . Relatives of the teenage boy accused police of chasing Hickey, who drove his bike into a fence and died. Investigations found that the police officers in question - although they had followed the boy - are not responsible for his death.
