Redfern is a district of Sydney in the state of New South Wales , Australia . It is three kilometers south of Sydney's business district, downtown. Adjacent neighborhoods of Redfern are Chippendale , Surry Hills , Waterloo and Alexandria .

Social

The district was shaped by industry for a long time. Due to the de-industrialization, some parts of Redfern have become slum-like . Unemployment is statistically recorded at 5.5% in 2016.

Redfern has a reputation for being a drug hub and crime rates are high. In the official account, Redfern is referred to as the "heart" of Sydney's Aboriginal community.

history

Redfern is named after the surgeon William Redfern , who in 1817 was given 100 acres (0.40 km²) by Governor Lachlan Macquarie .

The Redfern Post Office opened in 1892. Redfern is shaped by the numerous immigrants who emigrated to Australia and often found their first home there.

In 2004, the district made headlines after the accidental death of 17-year-old Thomas Hickey in street fighting between the police and residents of Redfern, mainly Aboriginal people . Relatives of the teenage boy accused police of chasing Hickey, who drove his bike into a fence and died. Investigations found that the police officers in question - although they had followed the boy - are not responsible for his death.

population

According to the 2011 Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) census, Redfern has 13,213 people. 54.3% of them are men and 45.7% women. 284 Aborigines live in Redfern, which is a percentage of 2.1%.
